Guest guest
by Grady When bands came out with a new c.d., they would speak to Rolling Stone and MTV, before those two entities were concerned with the flesh of the singer's skin being exposed rather than the flesh of the music being revealed. And we couldn't wait to read the interview and for the cd to come out.... I meant the c.d. to come out and not the singer to jump out of their clothes. lol When " making the band " actually meant that. You made the band because you could actually play an instrument, not sing and dance. If you only sang, you made the chorus! And if you only danced, you were part of a dance troupe, not a band! Remember when going to a live concert, the dancers were in the background, if they were any at all. And they were only there to get the crowd going or to dance with the music or musicians who were the real ones you had come to see in the first place. Now, the dancers are the show and the band is in the background in total darkness. Remember when the artists interviewed by either the news print media, like Spin Magazine, Crawdaddy and again Rolling Stone, or the TV media, like MTV, the interviewer would ask them, " So, Elvis Costello (using him as an example), what might we expect to see on your next release? " And the >>>musician<<< would always say, " Well, I'm hope my fans will like it. I thought I'd change my style of music from my previous c.d. which was mainly alternative-rock to alternative country. " And that exactly what the fans got. Not what Britney Spears said in a similar interview and her answer was, I kid you not, " Oh, for my next c.d., fans will notice I've changed my hair and my style of dress. " LOL Remember when the looks of the singer mattered less than the talent they possessed. Unless, you look like a Playboy Bunny, you're not even considered today. Remember Mama Cass, Sandy Denny, Elaine " Spanky " McFarlane, Janis Joplin, Carol King, Barbara Streisand, Carly Simon, Aretha lin, Nyro, and even Celine Dion who don't have a lot going on in the looks department, but they make you actually run to the c.d. store to buy their stuff as they're that good at what they do:). Today, none of them would even be given a second chance:(. Well, unless, they also " looked " like Britney, , Beyonce or Simpson. Remember when going to a concert you actually saw the musician play their instrument as well as sing, not play their crotch or bra and sing. Remember when going to concert, exactly meant that, you expected to " hear " the music. It never meant " seeing " an exotic strip show with " muzak " blaring as they danced. Remember when " Flash Dance, the movie was just that a movie, not a concert. Now Flash Dance is THE CONCERT. luv, grady
Guest guest
I actually disagree.... The lead singers of the biggest rock bands right now, Mayer and Coldplay aren't exactly good looking. (sorry if other females contest me on this) Coldplay is a multi-platinum, extremely talented band and has been listed under Rolling Stone to be the next U2. Also, some of the other leading bands - Smashmouth, FooFighters, Sheryl Crow - most of those bands have rather average looking people. And they all sing (or rock) very well. If you listened to Janet , in the mid-80's/early 90s, she sang some amazing ballads. Granted, she was provacative yesterday, but it's like, c'mon! How could CBS NOT think that she was going to do something sexual on national TV? That's like sticking a hand over a fire. The CBS commercials leading up to half-time certainly showed enough of her clevage. Did anyone catch Josh Groban before the Superbowl? They've been focusing so much on Janet that they forgot about him. Josh Groban is so amazingly talented (and ironically, yes, he's very good looking) as an opera singer, having being trained for such a long time and at such a young age. He's something to look out for! Anyway, minus the Janet's/Britney's/'s/Insync/ and whoever, music still lives and there is still plenty of quality music going strong. I think the boy bands and selected singers are a phase and will die off eventually. Irene (well back to the dwarfism thread..)
Guest guest
Oh, pl-eeeze. You must be looking for music in the wrong places. I have absolutely no clue what most of my favorite musicians look like. Don't mistake the bad taste of a few 12 year old girls to that of most people. And by the way, Simpson lookes like a mule. There really isn't any reason for a post like yours, the subject of bi**ing was simply changed to " reality shows suck " to " it sucks how music is about looks " . I think its sad that you seem to be unaware of so many great artists out today who do not look like the people you mentioned. The Gorillaz, one of my favs, perform behind a curtain to sold out audiences. The problem your refering to doesnt exist, except for in your own mind, sorry. And I agree with the other person who responded, about coldplay and others. -Cherub

Humm interesting...As an individual who has been around music from Led Zeppelin to Sound Garden to Madona and now even Britny Spears. I must say that I know true singing and talent when I hear it. What I would like to point out here is that the Recording industry is no longer owned or run by the same artistic group of fantastic people it once was, instead the Recording industry has all just about anyway, been bought out by large Corperations who most have and had no idea what true music is was or should be. Today it is Assymbaly line producton or " Cookie Cutter " music. Alot of the artists that I see have been mentiond here don't have much talent ether. Just because someone pulls out top record sales does not mean they can sing or play an instrment. It means that they have in some cases been carefully " Marketed " and packaged to apeal to people who truly do believe that in fact they can sing and are talented. It sadens me to see how bleek Rock music has become today, kids who can hardly play three chords and can't sing to save their life are selling millions of CD's why? Because we are being brainwashed into thinking that in fact this is talent and why not if there is nothing better out there to offer. I gave up on " Rock music " long ago and moved into the Funk, R & B and " Pop " world, why? because that is where the money is and in my opinion there is so little good music left out there that impresses me that I can't even stand to listen to it! I can hardly call Coldplay,Smashmouth, and the FooFighters talent. Yes they have been successfull and made a lot of money but then so did Milli Vanilli, You can't lable an artist's talent or lack of on their record sales or concert sales because most of it is hype and the younger public today has such a short attention span that they could not really relate to " Talent " if it was right in front of them. Today it's called " Trends " these bands today can hit it big if they are trendy and apeal to the younger record buying crowds. I hardly doubt that if no one knew who Jimi Hendrix was and he poped up today he couldn't make it he would be laughed at and no one would even bother to take notice of him. What does it cone down to? It cones down to that in order for us to see anything as worth it we have to " See it " almost no one will bother unless they " see it " . As the song says " Video Killed The Radio star " MTV desroyed music and changed it's corse forever. > > If you listened to Janet , in the mid-80's/early 90s, she sang > some amazing ballads. Again that would be wonderfull but honestly this is not a phase, you have ti understand who it is that goes to concerts and buys 85% of the CD's is it over 30's or over 40's no, It is the kids in Jr. High and High school. You see once again if you have a family going to a concert or buying that CD that maybe you would like but that money needs to pay for daipers or baby food is now where your prioritys are. The kids who listen to Britney and will in about 6 or 7 years be in the same place and then the next batch will rise up. that is just how it is. Yes some artists such as Elton can still make a lot of money but a lot of it is from past sales too or movie scores etc. Kurt~ > > Irene (well back to the dwarfism thread..) Guest guest
Thanks Kurt. It's not there aren't any talented average looking musicians out there as that wasn't the gist of my post at all. It's just that the cookie cutter mass-media made singers are getting the most attention, sometimes all of the attention, of the media out there, including the grand daddy of all the rock media, Rolling Stone. It used to cover in depth the music they the artists played, now it uncovers in depth the clothes Britney, and Pink are not wearing. Forget about the instruments they're not even playing as that doesn't even matter to RS anymore. Case in point, I remember 2(?) years ago when Ramone, one of punk music's foundling fathers along with Iggy Pop, died of cancer. RS merely had a blurb on him, his death and his contribution to punk music. That was sad as he was contribution to Punk music and worth as a musician should've been more than a blurb, but in the same issue they had a full spread of Britney of what shewas (not) wearing. Go figure, that's RS of today. So, I agree with you too, Irene, on Coldplay as being talented average looking artists. I'll even go further than you did, they should've been the ones at half time at the Super Bowl, not e, Janet, and Shania at a previous Super Bowl. Thus, re-read my post to truly understand what I'm saying, it's the industry today and what's being flashed before our eyes as talent when there's no talent at all. Rather it's only looks, to those in charge of the major part of the industry. I hate to say this too as I know a few on here are ga-ga over them:P, but I feel the fame about these non-12 year olds: Shania Twain, who may still hog a Harley like 18 year old like she did in her video, Faith Hill, who I swear wants to look like Britney Spears sooo bad I'm surprised she hasn't gotten plastic surgery for it, and Shelby Lynne, who looks younger and younger on each new cd of hers. How does she do that anyway? And finally, Garth , with his episode of pretending to be alter younger imaginery self as Gaines. Are the musicians, the older ones as well, afraid of getting older? Remember when aging, especially to a musician, brought a depth of maturity and wisdom to their music (eg. ny Cash). Bring back Loretta Lynn, who is not only a coal miner's daughter but she looks like she was born in a coal mine and no one cared too. That's my point and those previously mentioned are not even close to being 12 years old. It's sad that some on here see my posts as being anti-this or anti-that, rather than if they just read them for them and saw what I've been saying this all along, " (Just) gimme some >>>TRUTH<<<, " which was also said and sang by Lennon, a true musician, a true star and an average looking one at that too. Actually, some have felt he was ugly, especially in his later years when he got so thin, but could he still make us sing and think:). I don't care if the reality show goes on but don't call it that, call it a game show. I'll go as far as this, I don't care if a bunch of dwarfs go on TV and tape an orgy show but then don't call it Extreme Makeover or Survivor! LOL The same with music, since I own over 1,000 cd's and love music a lot, don't call it music when the only thing I wanna do with their cd is NOT play it, but take the cover out to do something else with it in my bathroom. Again Kurt, thanks. I just want the truth, grady > What I would like to point out here is that the Recording industry is no longer owned or run by the same artistic group of fantastic people it once was, instead the Recording industry has all just about anyway, been bought out by large Corperations who most have and had no idea what true music is was or should be.
