Guest guest
Hi Sue. How come they take the fluid out what do they do with the fluid? What do you mean you feel like you had your brains sucked out .Well you take care:-) juneflower60 or SusieSue <Suzeegrape@...> wrote: MargaretWith an epidural, they put in the drugs. With a spinal tap, they take out fluid. I have had both. The epidural is nothing. The spinal tap was like having you brains sucked out. I guess it's something like going to the dentist - I was really scared of that most of my life (unpleasant memories of dental work I had done as a child in the 1950s...) - used to put it off and off.... Until I needed major dental work done during the past year - one extraction and several root-canals and crowns and bridges. I always associated root-canals with excruciating pain (thanks to one I had done a few years ago by a dentist of the "old school" who refused to give me an injection - said "I need to know how much it hurts you, so that I'll know if I got all the nerve out.") This time I was lucky to have a very sensitive and sympathetic young Russian dentist - and I was amazingly surprised to discover that my root-canal treatments were completely painless!!> I'm beginning to think this hip surgery won't be quite as bad as I've been fearing....> > Margaret - feeling reassured and thankful for modern medical advances..... Guest guest
Hi Sue, Thanks for letting me know about that. When I had my Hip replacement and Knee replacement I only remember having a test done for my heart I think I had a x-ray also . Well you take care , SusieSue <Suzeegrape@...> wrote: SusieThey take out the fluid to test for any problems. Entirely different than an epidual. My tap had nothing to do with replacements. The pressure change in your spinal cord just feels like you brains are being sucked out. At least that is how it was in my case.Sue> > ----- Original Message ----- > > (I had polio back in the early 1950s, when I was 9 - thankfully > made a full recovery! - but I still remember the pain of the needle > they stuck into my spine... for a spinal tap, I guess.) At least that is how it was in my case. Sue They told me that my anesthesia was a spinal block not an epidural. I had had an epidural with a couple of my baby deliveries. Every time I said the word “epidural,” they would correct me and say, “spinal block.” For the record, they gave me Versed. It is what they used to give women in labor to forget the labor. It was called “twilight.” I remember going to the pre op area. I remember everything there. I remember them saying it’s time and that is the last thing I remember before I woke up in the OR. I did hear them working away but it didn’t bother me. I didn’t feel a thing. They were hammering sounds too etc. I don’t remember the recovery room and I only vaguely remember getting to my room. So I don’t even know what I said or what happen with the spinal block. What I do know is that I didn’t have all the recovery complications that I’ve had with general anesthesia. No sore throat. No stomach problems. No headache. I thought it was much better. The ONLY problem I had was recovering bladder control. But that is a personal problem that I have anyway.
