Whatall this talk i see in the group about nursing homes? Mouthorgan0z/Marie

_______

The talk about nursing homes has to do with the "short term rehab" units in nursing homes. These are special units that use Part A Medicare benefit to pay for your stay and for your intensive rehab. They are pretty much the equivalent of the hospital rehab units, and have about the same rules and regulations, except that the nursing home units seem to be able to have a somewhat slower pace.

One of the participants in this group was put into a nursing home for rehab, apparently not on a specialized unit such as most of them have, and had bad experiences with roommates, staff, and getting out of there. I think this might have been an exception. I have run a couple of these units rehab-wise myself, and know that we did very good work. I have also now been through a hospital rehab program, and I am sure we did as well as they did. But mileage varies, and one needs to check out the "short term rehab" in nursing home programs in your area to see which ones are doing a good job and providing a positive experience.

My xrays are still with me - I have to bring them to the hospital on the day of admission (day before the surgery) - so I hope he'll have time to look at them again before he cuts into me!

Actually, I thought the Xrays were part of how the surgeon decides what size prosthesis to use. Maybe at the place you are, he has everything he needs at hand and any choice he wants to make at the time. Does he maybe have another set of Xrays or intend to get another set???

Not pretending to know anything about how they do this, but had assumed tht the Xrays were used????

No he doesn't have another set. The system here is that when you have xrays done, they are handed to the patient, who keeps them, and takes them to an appointment where the doctor might need to see them.

But I guess you're right - that he has everything at hand, all shapes and sizes and types, and makes his choice at the time of surgery. This is a specialist hip replacement unit - that's all they do, replace hips. I guess knees are done by a different unit. It seems rather like taking your car to, say, an exhaust place when your exhaust pipe needs changing - that's what they do, and they have every type, but they wouldn't be able to change your battery or your wheels. Highly specialized surgery - he could probably do it with his eyes shut. (I hope he won't!)
