Guest guest Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 Congratulations Kim on your 18 pound weight loss!! I am not a bandster yet but I have heard that the 1st 6 weeks is the hardest. Guest guest Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 Hi Kim, I think there are quite a few people in FL that get their fills there too. Depending on where they live, some have said they have had good results. Maybe they can give you more info. Don't panic! Just use a smaller plate and be conscious of how much you are putting on your plate. Guest guest Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 You sound like I used to be 8 weeks ago! I'm 56 and had a RTKR and I'm doing great! All that pain is gone (except for the re-hab pain....which can be bad at times), but it's not that stabbing bone-on-bone pain I used to have.....hang in there till you can get the Replacement done, but do wait till the infection is completely gone before doing it! To the others:....the past couple days I've had a little more sharp pains in the inside part of the knee.and it's been a lot "stiffer" ....the therapist did an exercise where she "pushes" down on the knee and holds for 30 seconds...could that have done it.....or I've been on the squat machine and doing 10 pushes using only the new knee.....could that have done it too? Any ideas? Quote
Guest guest Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 My OS told me to never do squats, either before or after TKR. He said it puts way too much pressure on the knee & can seriously shorten the life of the implant. Ann S. Re: Hi I'm a newbie You sound like I used to be 8 weeks ago! Guest guest Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 This about squats is good to know. I don't do them but it is good to know not to to them. Guest guest Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 I really want to do squats because it makes your quads look so good, so when I was doing pre-op exercises & getting more & more able to do exercises, I went to the gym to try horizontal squats. I set it on the lowest weight and only "squatted" to about 15 degrees -- but it gave me more pain than anything else I'd done, including that long walk I took. I just looked up squats on line. There are a lot of sports sites that say squats are not bad for knees, but good, and are used in rehab. However, my doc did say not to do them, and I did have the experience above. One site said that the weaker the muscles are around the knees, the more pressure is exerted on the patella and the ACL and PCL, so maybe that's why it hurt me. Ann S. Guest guest Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 Hi . Welcome to the group. I know you are in a perdicament . Definitely you must be healed of the infection before having a tkr. You will be so glad to have your knee done though as all of the current pain will be gone. I hope you heal from the infection soon. I know where Coqutilam is. I live on Whidbey Island in Washington. We go up to 100 mile each year but spend the night in Hope. such beautiful country. Guest guest Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 Hi Thanks so much for the assurance. Can you tell me what type if any of exercises you needed to do before your surgery? Or what type of tests you were put thru before surgery? I was going to go for a walk today, but went to help make 45 jars of antipasto with friends and choppeddddd all day!! Boy was I tired, not use to doing something like that, will try again tomorrow though. I have to wait for my husband to be home as I don't go out too far on my own. Guest guest Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 Hi My surgery was going to be last June 12th, but I have an infection right now so the surgery has been put on hold indefenitely. Here's the story - sorry it's so long (and sometimes boring!!!) In 1999 I had a hystorectomy which resulted in an abdominal hernia, in 2001 I had a gortex-lined mesh done but after the first week of recovery it became infected - the surgeon wanted it to heal on it's own - after 3 years he removed the mesh and I had a muscle resection done and from that surgery (2 yrs ago) I still have an open area on my scar line and that becomes infected, then I go on anti biotics and it closes, then opens again etc. I have seen an infectious desease Dr. (had lot's more anti biotics) and am still waiting for it to heal!! I have had an ultra sound, a CT scan and an MRI done. Apparently there is still some fluid left (and they don't kinow why), not enought to put another drain in, so we are just letting it drain and close on it's own....YUK! So after all of the above - I can't go in a public pool to go swimming, which would really help with my mobility and my weight. Taking walks are not easy, I use a cane and am unsteady. I would think about a gym but we are now on one income as I was forced into early retirement (I intend to return as soon as I am up and walking). So my knee surgeon says it's a very painful surgery - what do you say? How long is your recovery? Do you work? What about pain meds? Thanks for lisenting and for the info. Sorry for going on so much. I was going to go for a walk today, I had been taking a water aerobic class twice a week for a couple years so I'm sure that helped....also while watching TV at night i would put a 2 lb weight on my ankle and do straight leg raises to build up the quad muscles...and while driving i would lift the leg up and down (it;s my left leg)...also helping the quad.....of course, they cut the quad during the surgery, so that is the most pain for the first week or so..... When is your surgery again?? Now you can have a huge leap forward in email: get the new . Quote

How long is your recovery? Do you work? What about pain meds? Wow..that infection sounds bad!! I assume you have been to other doctors for second opinions?? That is such a shame! Yes, the knee surgery is painful for the first 2 weeks, but that is what pain meds are for! I was on a morphine pump the first 2 days in thehospital, then they put me on oxycontin, which made me sick as a dog! So I asked for Vicodin which I know I can tolerate and I have been on that for the past 8 weeks (not all day long, I just take one before PT and usually that's it for the day and night) 2 weeks ago I went in for outpatient surgery to have my ovaries removed, so now I'm recovering from that and taking maybe one more pain pill a day for that, but the knee feels OK now.....just the stiffness and heat from PT.... Well I hope your infection clears up and you can get some relief for the knee soon! Keep us posted! Quote
Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Hi , As everyone has been telling you that TKR is extremely painful for the first 2-weeks but then gets better as each week passes. My wife is a pharmacist so I know very well how pain medication works. The reason why the pain killers and anit-inflamatory medications are not working as well as they used to is because your body is becoming aclamated to them. In other words, you are becoming used to them. What ever pain medication you are taking, tell your doctor that the current dosage isn't working for you any more. If he/she knows what kind of pain you are in and that it is real pain and not imaginary, he/she will increase the dosage. But be careful, the higher the dose of pain medication you take, the harder it is to come off it afterwards. It will also inhibit the post operative medication from working very well for you. Therefore, your doctor will have to make special arrangements with the hospital to give you more than the normal post operative pain meds. Good Luck, Alan B. > > Hi everyone > > Just wanted to intoduce myself, my name is , I am 54 years old, married to a wonderful man, 4 kids (I have to boys, he has one of each), 5 grandchildren, I am retired due to health issues. > I have osteo arthritis in both knees, bu the right is really bad.
