Sorry Kaylee! I didn't recall you posting before and I (mistakenly)

assumed your post was misdirected.

Rita,

Take care of yourself.. you didn't mention it, but severe joint and muscle

pain are also side effects. So if you are sore also, blame the Taxol.

Sending healing light your way.

Brightest Blessings!

Dear ,In terms of distance I don't think we could be further apart, but today I feel so close to you and happy for you as well.I am SO glad that it is going well for you. I know what you mean about the support. Being alone in any traumatic situation is frighteninly difficult and words and people can bring such much-needed comfort. I would bet that your husband is feeling very happy today too. Our loved ones go through it as well don't they?BIG HUGS. So glad it went well! I know that first drink is pure heaven.

How is the leg? When do you go home? Are you flying?

Make sure you get plenty of rest when you get home you have been

through 2 surgeries and your body needs to heal.

Great news !!!!! Welcome to a new lease on life.

Hi everyone! The world's biggest chicken justr returned fromt he

hospital 2 hours ago after RHR. Have to say that I have stiffness and

pain but nothing compared to before. Imagine I can say that 4 days

after surgery. I realize this is going to be a long haul but this is so

much better than the other pain. Question- When did you get the OK to

take a bath or shower. I fell so dirty but can't. I just want to wash

my hair. Margaret

After your stitches are out and there is good healing of your incision.

I think it was two weeks for me but in the meantime I could use that

new cling saran wrap and that keeps the water out while you take a

shower.

I washed my hair before I left the hospital but was

unable to do it myself. If you have a friend or family

member around you could wash your hair in a wash basin

(bending over a sink is impossible - trust me I

tried). Or if a wash basin is a little tricky or

difficult a hand held shower is great as well - you

still need someone to help. Just walk with your walker

or cruches to the edge of the tub (no going in or

anything and lean your head in and have a big towel

around you so any dripping water does not get near the

incision.

For baths if the surgeon hasn't told you yet ask your

physio. I find I didn't feel as clean as after a

shower with sponge baths myself. Do you have a bath

bench? It was a life saver and it still is basically

when you get the ok to bathe you have someone put it

in the tub and you sit on the edge and swing the legs

in the tub. I didn't have my first shower for 3 weeks

(2 weeks in hospital and one week at home before

physio came in) after the surgery and let me tell you

I loved it. A hand held shower is great but if you

don't have one find a big sized cup and face clothes

to help rinse the soap off. Good luck with the

healing.

I took a shower while in the hospital. They just taped saran wrap over the

incision. It gets

wet, but the idea is not to soak it. Having said that, I would not take a

bath...sitting in a tub

of water..... until the stitches are out and there is no drainage of any kind.

It will also be

tough to figure out how to get down into a tub and back out again. I don't know

if I could do

that without bending too much in the wrong direction.

Get a shower chair or something that you can sit on whiile in the shower.

Margie--

If you had the surgery, you're no chicken. I think all of us had doubts and

fears before surgery-- that's natural. What's UNNATURAL is having a crew of

medical staff cut open part of one's body to rummage around and do carpentry

work inside! I almost walked (hobbled?) out of the hospital the night

before my first replacement.

I showered immediately once I was home (5th day after surgery), used the

shower to get the bandage off without hurting, patter the incsion cry-- I

had staples, not stitches, which came out at 2 weeks post-op. At 6 weeks

post-op I was driving (automatic) and walking unassisted (no walker,

crutches or cane). You should be able to wash your hair over the sink

(kitchen sink, if the bathroom sink is too small) at any time, now.

PT got easier every day, and after years of pain I was able to return to

life as a real human being. The stiffness and pain of surgery go away, and

once the staples/stiches are out and the incision is closed, you can go

swimming, too... I don't know what I would have done without the hip

replacements.

Good luck to you, and welcome to the club!
