Guest guest
I am a 33 year old male needing bi-lateral hip replacement due to osteo arthritis. I am currently scheduled to replace one hip next week and the second hip 9 days later. The plan is to use ceramic on ceramic. I have recently read, in another discussion group, a lot about a new procedure now being done in a study in the US called Hip Resurfacing. All I have read in this other discussion group is positive towards the Hip Resurfacing for somebody of my age, wanting to remain active post surgery. Has anybody in this group gone through the decision of Hip Resurface versus Total Hip and decided Total Hip was the way to go? What were your factors in that decision? Thanks for any thoughts on this.
Guest guest
check the other web sites and look hard at resurfacing, it is my understanding that resurfacing still allows you to have a thr in the future, recovery may be longer on the resurfacing but you still have your own parts. as good as my thr has been , real parts have to be better. jbgimpypverrier <pverrier@...> wrote: I am a 33 year old male needing bi-lateral hip replacement due to osteo arthritis. Guest guest
I would have opted for resurf, and my surgeon had prepared to do it, but had warned me that my femur might be too damaged by cysts for that and a THR would be necessary. In the event, that is what happened - too much damage and a LTHR on 17.1.04 - sometimes what we want isn't possible. Guest guest
Dear 33 year old male needing bi-lateral hip replacement: I read your note about seeking advice. It appears that you are seeking a justification for a total hip, which the following response is not. I recently had my hip resurfaced and posted an offer of my diary of the resurfacing. You are welcome to read that, it may be of help to you in the decision making process. Let me say this: the resurfacing procedure is frequently opted for by the younger patient, especially the individual who wants to remain active or return to activities that have been lost. The THR allows some activity but, generally, individuals are not allowed to return to certain activity levels. In contrast tri-athletes, judo experts, rock climers, soccer players (like me) are able to return to those activities. There are plenty of testimonials on the surface-hippy site. If you're looking for an opinion I recommend Dr. DeSmet of Belgium who did my surgery as is extremely available in spite of his location in Europe. He responds to emails quickly and answers all questions. He has done over 1100 resurfacing procedures. I am a medical doctor but I wouldn't want you to think mine is a medical opinion. It is the opinion of someone who has done extensive research in the area of hip surgery and has concluded what is best for himself.
