Guest guest
Kathy I have not used Curves, but have heard it is not for 'hippies'. One reason being that they do not have trained therapists on staff and some of the workout spots are too much for a hip replacement. You might check this out as I am just passing on information I have seen here on the board. Ask your OS about it, or your physical therapist. Helen 4 week update activity level and a question?? > Hello all it is Kathy B from Massachusetts (38 yr old female THR > 4/9/04) I wanted to report in that this new hip thing is the best > thing I ever did for myself!! Guest guest
I concur in the caution about Curves franchises. I opted to continue going to the fitness center that is housed in conjunction with the physical therapy practice where I had my therapy after both THRs. Their staff has degrees in exercise science plus they already have my therapy file and know my limitations when they design a new exercise program for me. My take on Curves is that their staff does not necessarily have any pertinent academic training, that it is a " canned " program. They also limit use to 30 mins. (??) This is a benefit I guess (sort of) for those who don't have any more time to spare. And Curves franchises are a business success. It's a women- only deal so no men need apply. I routinely spend at least an hour at my fitness center. Also Curves is a lot more expensive than my fitness center which allows me unlimited visits for $261/yr. Can't beat that. On the other hand I'm sure you will find a hippie or two out there who does Curves and likes it. If you travel, you can, I think, go to any Curves franchise. But I wonder how many people bother. If I were you, to satisfy your curiosity, wait awhile until you are fully healed and have your strength back, ask your OS if it's OK, go for a free trial session and assess things for yourself. Just for fun, ask them how their program fits in with recovered hip replacement patients needs and precautions. See if there answer shows any hint of them knowing what they are talking about. Just don't let them " sell " you on the free month or whatever their current deal is if you sign up immediately. In the meantime you can't go wrong continuing to do your PT exercises, walk increasingly long distances and try to advance to something besides walking (elliptical trainer? bicycle?) for cardio benefits. Also don't forget about the rest of your body. I purchased 5 lb. barbells and ankle weights and use those at home sometimes even though the fitness center has them also. > Kathy I have not used Curves, but have heard it is not for 'hippies'. Guest guest
I dont know anything about curves, but as long as you are not going over the 90 degree range or twisting , it should help you a lot. I am going to the ymca and using nautilus equipment. they showed me how to use it and how to set up the machines that would not put my hip in any danger, and set up a complete program . so far i love it. not only am i getting my legs back in shape , but my whole body as well. ggod luck jbgimpyKathy <k_miller_2000@...> wrote: Hello all it is Kathy B from Massachusetts (38 yr old female THR 4/9/04) I wanted to report in that this new hip thing is the best thing I ever did for myself!! My question is about the exercise program curves has anyone heard of it and does anyone with a hip replacement currently use it? I am very excited about starting an exercise progam once the surgeon releases me and this one looks like it would be great? If anyone has knowledge on this please let me know. I really appreciate it!Kathy B
