Guest guest
Bill My hip is now 14 months old. It is just recently that I have been able to sit on the side of my bed, and pull my knee up to rest on the bed beside me with the foot being reachable. I am extremely cautious about reaching too far, even then. But I do get my own support sox on. I have shoes with velcro straps. MargeBill, as far as I am led to believe, you shouldn't be attemting that particular motion (ankle-on-knee) at all! It violates two of the basic hip precaution rules (against turning inward and crossing legs). Get some loafers!
Guest guest
Baby: the decision to have the surgery is based on your quality of life, and the amount of discomfort you tolerate. You can always go to another doc for a second opinion. If you are as limited as you indicate, I would think you were near time for the replacement. As for your back/hip pain, often back pain is releived with the hip replacement, but you may have something going on in your back too. Have you gone to a Physical Therapist, and tried to work out the pain in your back? Perhaps your doc would approve of that for now. Marilyn babynightnights wrote: -Hello, I posted last month when I found out I have an arthritic hip that will need replacing at some point. I can't do those movements now without pain....lifting the leg to ties my shoe or put my leg in a pair of pants. I thought the surgery would take care of that and I could do it without pain. I also have a searing pain in my lower back on the same side as the hip especialy while riding in a car. The ortho dr. doesn't see a back reason for the pain on an MRI. Could it be from the hip ? I don't know.... maybe I have more than one thing going on. I do have the groin..thigh pain and it is worse on some days. Some days it is not much of a problem. But, my whole right leg/hip knee feel different than the left. The Dr told me not to run out and get a replacement yet. I wish I could find a Dr that would really tell me the extent of things. He tells me that " these things" progress at different time frames in different people. I don't know when it will be time. I'm very frustrated, I did hear today that one of the lead dancers with SF Ballet is a man in his 60's who dances Flamenco onstage with two THR's. That was encouraging. Happy Holidays ! Guest guest
Hey, thanks Leigh, I didn't think of using a chair and using the bent knee outward to bring the foot up toward my body in order to make my foot accessible to put a sock and shoe on. At my first follow-up visit to my surgeon/PT on November 23 (my op was on Oct. 19), I was given another set of exercises to perform to aid in flexability. One of the exercises is to sit up in bed with my back against the backboard of the bed and my legs straight out in front of me. I move my unaffected left leg out to my left keeping it straight. I then move my affected right leg by bending it at the knee (frog style) out to my right. The goal is to have the bottom of my right foot lay against the knee of my unaffected left leg. I would think I could use the same bending of the affected leg, with the use of a chair, to accomplish bending my affected leg out to the side in order to have the foot in a position to allow me to place a sox and shoe on the foot. I will try using your method and see if it helps me out. I appreciate your response.. Thanks, Bill the Swedeleigh_3220004 <Lgh@...> wrote: Hi Bill,I'm 8 weeks post op and in a similar possition regarding the socks and stairs. Having just come off precautions I agree the putting shoes on by putting the ankle on knee is going to take an age, if ever. I sit in a chair and make sure my knee is facing outwards then bend down in between the legs to the foot to put socks and shoes on.I stop if I feel any pain! Also I lie on the floor and stretch the leg out at the hip gently in the hope of ever achieving that move.I just started practicing putting the bad leg up the stair first. Its going to take a while to build those muscles up! Thankfully I only had 2 PT sessions post op and am going weekly now. The PT suggested the bad leg up the stairs but it is a killer so I'm only doing it sometimes. Just thought I'd let you know someone else is in the same boat. I'm sure with patience we'll get there!Best wishes,Leigh
