Hi Louis:

I'm 55 now and also self employed. I am scheduled for a TRHR April

20. I use to ride a lot when I was younger. A coupe of years ago

they opened a new Harley store here. I got the urge to buy a

Classic. I should have bought one 10 years ago with what they want

for them now. I hadn't been on a bike for a few years. I hopped on

and all was fine until it began to tip to the right. I planted my

foot and pushed back and let me tell you, the pain was incredible. I

did ride it around the parking lot in front of the store and decided

to give it back before someone like me got hurt.

I don't think riding would make your arthritis worse, but it's going

get worse as the clock ticks. Making the decision for me was when I

asked my wife to go buy me a cane. I worked out a lot and no matter

what I did, it just kept getting worse. Call it silent

encroachment. You learn to live with it and you get use to the

pain. Then one day it becomes more important than anything else and

you come to the conclusion that you have put it off way to long. If

you think you might need one,,,,do it now.

Hi Louis,

I rode a

Suzuki 650 after undergoing a total hip replacement. I had no problems with riding. After going down on soft gravel I was able to get the bike up

on my own.

A total

hip replacement is a last resort measure.

Pain and your doctor will tell you when you need it and at that time you

will welcome it. I’ve had mine for

18 years pain free with no regrets.

I have also been very active during this time.

Cheers,

Dennis

MOTORCYCLES & HIP PROBLEMS

I am a 43 year old active man. I have been diagnosed w/

Osteoarthritis on my left hip. In all honesty, I am scared to death

of the possibility of undergoing THP. I am self employed and like to

ride motorcycles(Sport Touring). Anyone here ride bikes too? Does

riding make it the arthritis worse? Have you had THR? When do u

decide at what point to go thru w/ the surgery?.. I am able to walk,

etc., but feel the arthristis getting progressively worse.

Feedback & advice welcomed

Hi Louis,

Nice to see some fellow " bikers " in the group. My wife and I each

ride Yamaha V-Stars (1100 Classic). Like you, I'm also in my early

40's and very concerned about how my hip problems will affect my

ability to ride. In fact while one Dr. was explaining THR and its

advantages and disadvantages, I couldn't help but interrupt with that

nagging question " Yeah, but can I still ride? "

He assured me that after proper healing, I should have no problem. I

have to tell you, that sure sounds great, since now I'm somewhat

limited at riding any great distance. Unfortunately, my financial

status at present will keep me from surgery for about another ten

months, but if all goes well, my wife and I are planning on putting

some miles under our butts next summer.

I wish you well in your search for answers, and I'd like to pass on

some great advice I've been given since I first considered THR: Ask

questions, express your concerns, check out the infinite internet

sources of info, and don't let anyone (doctors included) talk you

into something you're not comfortable with.

Best wishes for good ridin',

Jac

Hi Louis, I hope you're back on your bikes before you know it. For me, I'll be happy to be able to walk the mall again. When I visited my daughter a few weeks ago, we had to borrow a wheel chair so we could spend some time together in a shopping mall, which is a favorite activity for both of us. Thanks for writinig.
