Hi everyone, My name is and recently turned 44. Found out last week I need total left hip replacement. I was caught off guard because I've never sustained injury or trauma to the hip and it's not familial. My surgery is scheduled for December 9. Are there any exercises I should focus on in the meantime to assist in recovery?

there are many sites about with exercises that you need to do

after the operation. Start doing what you can of them. They will

strengthen the muscles you need to have strong after the operation.

Hi ,

I had left hip replacement recently. I'm doing very well, but wish I had done more all-round exercises pre-op. I think stretching exercises would have helped. Your whole body is involved. My arm and shoulder bothered me when I went to the cane, and I've had a few minor pulled muscles, from stretching too far. (There's always something slightly out of reach.) Also, your good leg has to work harder. Sorry I don't have any specific suggestions. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Hi ,

That must have come as quite a shock that you needed a THR at your

age without any underlying conditions.

I chose not to do any exercises pre-THR as they hurt too much and I

didn't see the benefit of spending the last month before surgery

agrevating a sore hip. Others may disagree but I cant say its made

any difference in the recovery so far.

I think conventional wisdom says that you could strengthen the

muscles round the hip and outer thigh if your not in too much pain.

Post op you do lots of sliding the leg out to the side and into the

buttock and straight leg lifts.

I'm 31 and now I'm 4 weeks after surgery and my leg is much stronger

than before. I get out of the exercises what I put in now where as

before surgery the muscles stubornly refused to cooperate. Pre op

straight leg lifts caused pain-now they do not. It truely is amazing

how fast the body heals.

The muscles on the outer hip in my case were detached and

reattached. My hamstring is where he scar is. I cant see that

exercising them before hand would help them when they take a bit of

a bashing in surgery. It is worth it!

So be lazy, be kind to yourself and mentally prepare. Ask lots of

questions. Young muscles heal fast. The main thing I would say as

the very next day after surgery when the physiotheripist visits is

the time to diligently follow the exercises.

Best wishes,

Leigh
