DOES ANYONES DR. EVERY SAY ANYTHING ON THE WEIGHT ISSUE?IT SEEMS TO ME, BUT I AM NO DOCTOR THAT IT WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU DO CEMENT VS METAL ON METAL BECAUSE OF WT. ISSUES. IM OVERWEIGHT AND WONDER IF I SHOULD CONSIDER WT AS TO WHEATHER OR NOT I SHOULD DO SURGERY OR NOT. ITS HARD TO EXCERISE ANYWAY BECAUSE OF MY WT. AND HIP.

I have had both knees replaced and just recently had a hip

replaced. I was asking my doc about the hip replacement last week

and he said it was a " hybrid " --the rod into the femur is cemented

and the socket joint is not. He said that depends upon bone

strength. I am overweight to a certain extent but it had no bearing

on the prosthesis.

He said he cements all his knee joints now. Initially, with my

first TKR [at age 56] he put in a non-cemented prosthesis as the

current theory at the time was that they lasted longer and since I

was " younger " [i guess young is relative] he elected to do that

one. My other TKR at age 60 was cemented. The current theory is

that cemented is the way to go regardless, at least based on his

experiences. As far as I am concerned both knees are holding up

well. The cemented prosthesis was more quickly recovered from--

short time on the walker and I was using a cane and driving by 3.5

weeks. The hip recovery is six weeks on the walker, no driving and

then graduate to a cane for a while.

-Hi Al,

Sorry I am late with any sort of reply (had trouble

with computer) My surgery is Aug 2, 2004 and I guess I

am getting metal on cement. My right leg which is

where the THR is being done is also shorter then the

other leg since i was 13 years old and is even shorter

from all the wear and tear I am now 48. I hope the

THR corrects this because I didn't wear them then and

I will not wear them now (lifts.kids made fun of me

calling me enstein girl, now its for fashion) I

am also disappointed with the may some doctors are

they never seem to have time I cant get all my

questions answered praying they know what they are

doing! and thats why I come to these groups
