Guest guest Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 I have not had post op depression either time....BUT I am already on antidepressants so don't know if that is the reason. When my husband had major surgery a few years ago they told him one side effect would likely be depression. He was right. Guest guest Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 I didn't have depression after my surgery. I was amazed because I was so fearful of the surgery and put it off for 6 years. I will let you know how this next surgery affects me. I was very relieved after my surgery and happy that it went so well. Guest guest Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 Thank you everyone for sharing. I think this might help people who are suffering depression unexpectedly. From reading this group my guess is that most experience it to some degree after the surgery. I must admit that this group have helped me so much. It makes me wonder what happens to those who are having a bad time without any support. It must be dreadful. Guest guest Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 well i've already mention to y'all that i've dealt with depression since i was 23 and i'm not 58. i've had several surgeries since then and the only one i seemed to get depressed after was when my gallbladder was removed (the simpliest of all the procedures) and i think that's because i had a shot of cortisone prior because the doctor thought i might be allergic to latex. i was also "in a very bad place" emotionally at the time and had recently stopped my antidepressants. (however, because of the antidepressant i was on at the time, had i not stopped it when i did (on my own), i wouldn't have been able to have the emergency surgery, so it worked out okay in the long run.) i can't remember whether or not i was taking antidepressants when i had my hysterectomy and cervical laminectomy -- but i didn't get depressed. i am currently on zoloft and have been for 9 years now and the dosage was recently increased (doubled from 50mgs to 100mgs each day) in october -- so maybe this will keep me from getting depressed after my THR, i hope. i know the closer it gets, the more scared i'm getting -- scared of clots, that's about it -- oh and not waking up from the anesthesia. i guess everyone worries about that last one though. Guest guest Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Oh, Debbie, did I say life seemed unfair? That hardly seems the right word in your case. What a nightmare. All of life's crises are raining down you at once. And then there is the pressure for a picture-perfect Christmas. Ho, ho, ho, huh. :-) But it does sound, despite all, there will be a lot of love in your house on Christmas Day. And that's something not everyone has. I can hear some hope in your message -- like you may some light at the end of the tunnel. My mantra is "Just wait until spring." We'll be more healed, the world will be warmer. And you will soon be able to get back to helping your loved ones. Just keep taking care of Debbie for now. The strength you show by finding the time and energy to sit down at the computer and share with us gives me strength. You give me the resolve to take one of my vacation days to open those medical bills that have started arriving and figuring out a payment plan. One day that part will be done and one less worry for us. Keep sharing! Guest guest Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Debbie just keep digging because it’s at least supposed to get better. I’m a fellow Michigander who’s luck doesn’t run toward the good side. My new adventure this week is my computer business was broken into on Sunday night and some lowlifes stole themselves some Christmas goodies. I usually have a way to laugh it off but not tonight. I will tell you that the ability to make fun at yourself really can help when you get overwhelmed. So try to find a tiny bit of humor in something and build on it. If only for a while it helps! Quote

I have not tried other treatment for a long time; however, I had knee replacement in September and was totally depressed for several weeks. I think it was the combination of pain, lack of family empathy, and being off work. I love my job and most importantly, the social contact. Once I went back to work I became myself again. Also, I have taken a vitamin B complex for a long time. I had stopped doing that before surgery. Several weeks after surgery I started taking it again, and it quickly made me feel better physically and mentally. > > Hubby is suggesting I visit his new doctor.
