Greg,

I had a LTHR on June 4th at 51 years. I waited 1.5 years for the

trident ceramic to go into production. I can say 'I feel your pain.'

I was on VIOX 50 and steroid shots every 3 months while I waited. The

shots were a big help but lost most of their effectiveness the last 6

months.

My surgeon has my a 90 degree flextion restriction for 1 year

until the muscles strengthen and support the joint. I'm not to have

my leg cross the midline of my torso or rotate my knee inward. I

don't know the time span on the last two restrictions but they should

1 year or less. The Idea is to not pop the joint apart.

I am now (17 days post surgical) and climbing stairs unaided. My

job also requires ladder work and this could be an issue. Pre-surgery

I was climbing strong leg only and plan to continue that way for some

time. I concern is the chance for distraction and stepping off the

2nd step in error. I and others do this about once a year, so I'll

have to watch my actions. I don't want a revision...

Good Luck with your procedure.

Germaine,

I also have (had) hip dysplasia with arthritis and had both hips scoped for labrum tears before my THRs. It also seemed to me that after the arthroscopic surgeries, my arthritis progressed very fast and within 6 months I needed the first THR!

I am still under many restrictions (first THR done in March, second in June). I am not sure about tying shoes because now that it's summer I just wear slip ons. Maybe by winter my bending restriction will be lifted. It's best to check with your OS since it seems each doc has different outlooks on this.

I did get a long-handled razor to shave my legs. It works pretty well. Before the THR's it was even harder to shave because I couldn't get the legs up and turned. Once I did get a leg up and then couldn't get it down. A real Kodak moment! I believe the website for the long-handled razor is www.dynamicliving.com.

I am currently walking with a normal gait and am pain-free from the arthritis. Originally my OS told me that the three things I would never be able to do were run, jump, and cross my legs. Therefore I'm hoping that eventually I will have the other restrictions lifted. But right now, even with the restrictions, I am so happy I had these surgeries done because it's so fantastic to be without the constant pain!

hip replacement restrictions

Hi! I am really curious about the restrictions after LHTR.How do you ever tie your shoes or shave your legs again.I am one of the younger ones having this done at age 39.I know in the long run I will be better off then I am now.I have hip displasia, arthritis, and have had hip arthroscopy of my left hip.The arthroscopy repaired a tear in my Labrum, which then left me walking worse then I was before.I am hoping with the new hip I will be able to walk without the side motion gait and pain that has kept me from doing alot of things. Thanks! Germaine

Hi Germaine....

Funny you should mention tying shoes and shaving legs. I am having a THR on 8/31 and these are 2 of the things I look forward to doing again. Maybe not the way I always did it, but it's humiliating to have your 12 y/o son put your socks on for you! I'm thinking it's going to be better post-surgery than it is now. I hope......

Hi Germie,

The shaving legs comes a little easier because of the handle on the razor. You can stretch and reach pretty far down your leg. It is a whole lot easier if you have some kind of seat in your shower which I was lucky enough to already have built in.

They give you the contraption to put your socks on. I only used that a couple of times, because since it is so hot I just wear a lot of slip on shoes. I would have to say that the tying the shoelaces is the most difficult. I am 9 weeks post-op and can now do it myself. I have a chair that has some side rails on it and I rest my foot up on that so that I can reach it better. Just be careful on that bending.

restrictions after LHTR.How do you ever tie your shoes or shave your legs again.>>> welp for me... I NOW perfer slip ons.... clog type shoes if U will.... U can even find tennis shoes which slip on. But I also have elastic shoe strings in my "old pair" which are fixed & adjusted to my liking (*few whip stitches keep them from coming untied)~ should I need them..... lil working with the extended shoe horn and grabbie snatcher (*as I call it) and poof..... on your foot before U know it. As to shaving.... I'm nearly 6'~ so I visited Lowe's for 5 gallon paint stirring paddle..... add my razor held in place by two tony tail holders... and POOF there when needed. :) To me... it's like dealing with anything else in this life which on occasion can be A PAIN~ you go with the flow and remember where there's A WILL... THERE IS A WAY!

I am hoping with the new hip I will be able to walk without the side motion gait and pain that has kept me from doing alot of things.>>> I certainly hope things go well for ya sweetie.... and you know a peaceful painfree step. Best of luck.... think positive the mind is a powerful tool when we use it correctly. :)
