Hi liney.

Why did they do a cat scan on you ? Well I wish you the best of luck.

Hi MimaThanks for your reply. It means a huge deal to methat people read what I post, let alone take time outof their life to reply. So thank you.I know what you mean by not wanting the operation. Ireally dont want to go through the things I am goingto have to in the next few months. I went for a CTscan on Wednesday, for them to build my new hip forme, and lying there in the strange tunnel gave me timeto think of all the things I want to do. How normalof a life will the new joint give me? I am lucky inthat I only have problems with one joint, I know itcould be so much worse.Keep smiling and in touchLiney

Hi

I had a CT scan to create a 3D image of my hip, so

that they can make my hip especially for me. Is that

uncommon then?

Friends

When I questioned my doctor if I really needed a THR he asked if I

wanted a ct scan to get further information substantiating his

opinion. I said no, since I had already had two other opinions.

Everything is possible, but I've never heard of custom made hips.

Sounds good, if it exists. Could he have meant to select the best

fit for you, because it seems strange to reinvent the wheel when

there are so many different products already on the market.

Re: staples, I had none. My doc used sutres. I don't know why. I had

about 12 to 14 stitches and no black and blue marks, that is,

brusing, afterwards.

I have been told that my hip joint is deformed (Once I

looked at the x ray noone needed to tell me) so they

decided it would be best if they made a joint

especially for me. However, this is not uncommon over

here esp when people are young! I still know very

little about THR's and would love to speak to someone

my age! - Im 28

ROM is Range of Motion. When you say you can "move your knee back", you're talking about something that can be measured in degrees. That's what us therapists do to report to medicare and insurance companies that you're making progress in PT, and also so we and you know you are.

Tailormade joints sound like a good idea. Since they exist, they

would exist in France, too. DePuy, one of the leading makers, is a

Isn't a ROM a " read-only memory " ? (LOL)

It has everything to do with the way we measure the Range of Motion of any joint. But where some of the Hip range is restricted (don't flex past 90 degrees), one wants as much in the knee as one can get, and they usually want at least 90 degrees before the person leaves the hospital. With many replacement prostheses, 120 degrees is the limit they can expect, but I found out a bit late that mine is stable past that......I have 135 now, but its getting harder and harder to get any more.

Hi Liney,

I am also 28 yrs old & awaiting a take down of a hip fusion followed

by a thr 4 weeks later on the same side (right). I am very well

aware of the term range of motion - you did not make it up! I have

had very limited rom for many years now. I was born with displasia

and then had severe avn. 10 yrs ago I went back to an OS due to the

avn taking almost all of the ability to move my right hip. They

determined at that point that there was not anything they could do

except for fuse my hip so that I would not get arthritis later in

life. Long story short - it obviously made my chief complaint much

worse. I have been waiting my whole life for a replacement so as of

right now, I am much more excited than worried. (I am sure that

will change a bit as it gets closer). My doctor tells me that my

rom will be infinately better than what I have now (which is none).

So the activities that I look forward to are sitting on the floor,

riding a bike, tying my shoes, etc. My thr recovery is a little bit

unpredictable because of the fusion and the non-use of my muscles

for so long. My doctor has not mentioned the term custom hip but he

will do a CT scan and computer mock-up of my hip & surrounding area

to assist him in the planning & during the actual operation. From

what I understand this is a fairly new technology but can be very

beneficial. I have read many of the posts on this board & am very

glad to have found it.

Hi Susie,

For me, range of motion (ROM) is simply how much my hip will move.

With 2 large pins going right through my hip joint - I do not have

any motion. It is kind of hard to picture because many people

think " well then how do you sit? " . I guess that is where the body

is amazing because I somehow bend at my pelvis & am able to sit -

although modified & typically with my leg out in front of me. My

Dr. does expect me to be able to sit on the floor. This is

something that I have not been able to do without my arms behind me

supporting me in many years.

This group has been recently & will continue to be valuable to me

while I await my thr and during the recovery afterwards.

Hi Colleen,

Thanks for letting me know that .

If I see another Dr and show him my xrays from my other Dr and he says I can sit on the floor I still don't know if I want to after all I am 61 I think I'll stay in the chair.

Well I wish you the best of luck and keep in touch with us I liked to know how your doing after your operation . Take care

Susie,

I hear you in regards to not caring if you sit on the floor. It is

definately not my first wish of activities but it is a good way to

describe some of my limitation that I want fixed. I have a young

daughter though so it would be nice to sit on the floor with her &

play comfortably. I will keep in touch throughout this whole

process. My surgery is not until December & I am sure I will have

questions leading up to it.

Have a nice night, Colleen
