What's New at PTCB

Webinar to Launch March 1, 2010

On March 1, 2010, PTCB will launch a FREE webinar and podcast developed in

collaboration with ASHP. This continuing education program will consist of

video, slides, and audio. The three speakers for this program are Rowell

s, Pharm.D., M.S., Director of Pharmacy at the University of North

Carolina (UNC) Hospitals and Clinics, Beth S. , Pharm.D., BCPS, Director

of Pharmacy at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, and Miriam

Mobley-, Pharm.D., Associate Dean of Chicago State University College of

Pharmacy.

Pharmacy Technicians' roles in the pharmacy continue to change as the

responsibilities of the pharmacist expands. Working under the supervision of the

pharmacist, technicians are now performing duties that allow the pharmacist

greater flexibility for direct patient care and implementation of new programs.

This program is meant to highlight innovative practices for pharmacy technicians

that advance the entire pharmacy team, and to outline the benefits of PTCB

certification in seeking these career paths.

The Program Learning Objectives are:

1.Describe innovative opportunities for PTCB certified technicians to assist the

health-system pharmacy team

2.Discuss the role of certified technicians in freeing up pharmacists for

clinical activities

3.Describe the importance of including pharmacy technicians in the

implementation of medication safety, quality assurance programs, and information

technology implementations

4.Explain the importance of pharmacy technician education, training, and

certification in obtaining innovative positions

On or after March 1, 2010, access the program at www.ptcb.org or

www.ashpadvantage.com.

Ronnie,

I don't know the time. But I think they will make it available as a recording.

Is that a community college you will attend?

Either way Congrats on making your decision!

For those of you who do not know, I made an audio/visual  CE for AAPT on Ethics

last year. Ronnie as an AAPT member completed the CE and volunteered his time to

AAPT through me. I immediately snatched him for his excellent English and he has

been one of the 3 AAPT CE editors ever since. A great help to me, as I am the CE

Developer and major CE authors. I keep him very busy!

Any way, Ronnie,  I am so very proud of you to join a pharm tech program in CA.

Tell me what made you decide to do this? You are self-taught? Right? or you went

to Penn ?  What made you decide to go to traditional school.

Respectfully,

Thank you for your support Jeanetta. I have had an overall interest in

health occupations for most of my adult life. I am somewhat self taught, but

the bulk of my experience came from 10 years of service in the United States

Navy Hospital Corps. Then, most recently I accomplished my PTCB

certification, by taking the pharmacy technician program through Penn

on-line. I had no doubt I would pass the PTCB exam using the Penn

courses as a refresher. What I wasn't prepared for or aware of was the

employment situation that was in " full tilt " , just about the time I became

certified. In CA we have been lingering around 10% unemployment since Apr.

2009 (give or take a month). Additionally I am from Stockton, CA where we

are #1 in very few things, but we made it in unemployment and during the

same period has " titled down " to 18%. Eeeek. Consequently, knowing that it

is possible for a newbie to attain a position in a pharmacy with the right

circumstances, hiring new help, time to train, etc. The time is not right,

here, right now. So, what should one do? Continue or enhance your knowledge

through any means possible. For some it might BE volunteering. If you are

certified take the CE required for re-certification. Some buy text on their

own and strengthen an area they might need a little mastery on. Others go

back to school for even a better chance at employment through externship

when the time comes, or just a little better reputation through higher

education. Since I have the time, I have chosen, " all of the above " . Thank

you again Jeanetta and AAPT for the opprotunities you have provided to me,

and Ms. Mastron if I may, I will always seek your direction for as long as

you allow me to.

Respectfully,

Ronnie L. King, CPhT

Will do Jeanetta! Little nervous about entrance exam. I sure it is very

basic, but frankly, I'm just a little tired of being tested more than any

thing. Well, I could probably get a job in the Circus, I've jumped through

enough hoops lately. :)

Your support is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Ron
