Guest guest
I could be totally wrong, BUT what I've been lead to believe is that California laws recently changed and so now every pharmacy tech has to take a pharmacy tech program. Guest guest
Dear All, I am sorry to report that this is not the case! As of Jan 2004 California passed a law that allows ONE of the following to become registered in addition to getting fingerprints: 1. Pass PTCB OR 2. Military Training OR 3. Graduation of Ca State approved Vocational Educational Program with an externship. Removed from the old law is: A. 1500 hours of OJT (usually retail Pharmacies took advantage of this) B. AS in hard science such as Health, Math, Chemistry, Biology or Physics Some of you KNOW how upset I am over this. IN FACT I almost closed my site over this because I do not want to be a part of helping California people to pass the PTCB and get registered. I BELIEVE that FORMAL education is the key to reduced errors, NOT passing a simple test! Practicing the key points learned in the classroom and mock lab setting is necessary for mastery of skills and prevention of med errors. I do not BELIEVE for one hot California minute that self study and passing of PTCB can replace such arduous formal, classroom structured education, traning and study that the military and vocational programs require!!!! The California educational system requires that all vocational programs include an internship or externship and yet the California State Board of Pharmacy has allowed people to become techs without such an externship by allowing them to self study and pass the PTCB. EVERYONE who knows me on line for over 2 years, KNOWS that I am the first proponent of a LAB component or test, in addition to the written PTCB exam. They also know that Jeanetta Mastron is the first person online and in person at any pharmacy related convention to call for a minimum national standard of education for pharmacy technicians!!!! I CAN NOT ENDORSE PTCB ONLY as a requirement for registrarion in the state of California. I can ONLY ENDORSE a requirement for formal education that matches that of the military or ASHP model curriculum at a vocational institution. Why California has gone backwards I do not know. I will not entertain any argument to this on this site. I am not looking for discussion of this topic on this site. I suggest another site = Pharmacy Island if you want to discuss this. I am merely correcting a statement that was made about California law regarding requirements to be a tech. My personal opinion is stated because it may affect this site!
