Good Day Everyone!

Question.... I bought a set of point probes in Vegas last year and was

instructed to clean them by boiling and using alcohol. I have been diligent

and everything was fine until........yesterday I opened the plastic bag I

store them in and they have acquired a most beautiful shade of blue/gray/black

patina! So, the question is, unless STAINLESS steel is supposed to do this,

which I don't think is the case, can I get the stainless steel look back. I

paid a lot of money for this stuff and it looks pretty funky. I definitely

can't put them in someones mouth looking like this and I don't want it to

repeat on my backup set.

The probes are silver coated. The substrateis brass for high conductivity.

Staineless steel is less good in this application

Boiling in sulphurous water or water containing conmtaminants may cause wa

reaction with the silver. Silver is pretty inert but all chemaical reactions

accelerate with temperature.

Thus autoclave are used where there is steam which is not contaminated.

The manuafcatures nor the manual recommends boiling

Alcohol immersion is satisfactory.

Alt. use a cold sterilant available form dental/med supply shops.

To restore try some silver cleaner then alcohol clean with toothbrush or

similar

try cleaning with baking soda. Shouldn't be a major problem.

Hello People, Savage from New Zealand

Reply from DR Alastair Bourne Ph.D. (Alastair is the designer,

developer and tester of the QXCI / Scio attachments)

Re tarnished tips.

let me first point out that good housekeeping in a clinic will tell

one to clean them. A basic principle of the principles of practice

and philosophy of running a clinic and being a clinician is that one

practices clean needle techniques and clean equipment techniques to

keep ones patients safe. You are morally required to do this if you

do not belong to an assoc that demands it.

I would now like to point out what is going on here. Stainless steel

is not employed in the manufacture of good quality EAV equip that

gives the operator optimally functioning equipment. Silver is the

product the tips are made up with. Silver is 100% more conductive

than Stainless that is the most important reason for its use. There

is another, mercury is a component of stainless steel .

All you need to do with a tarnished tip is clean it . Tarnish will

not poison one by the way.

's reply

The Probe tips are Silver Plated, not stainless steel, stainless is

nasty stuff, it contains Chromium, Nickel and Mercury, ( most

stainless steel welders don't live past 70, I know I have worked with

them. A number of my (ex- welder) patients come up with heavy metals)

Nickel is toxic, knives and forks are not nickel plated for this

reason, Silver plating is safe, that's why tableware is silver

plated.

I have not coated the tips with anything to stop tarnishing as I want

to keep everything chemical free

To Clean = Chemical (quickest) " Silvo " Like " Brasso " for cleaning

brass, Contains Ammonia

Chemical free = 4 Teaspoons of salt, 4 Teaspoons of Baking

soda ( bicarbonate of soda)

Add to 1 litre of water, soak for 10 minutes and dry with a soft

cloth or paper towel.

Re the pads. To clean use hot soapy water or meths or better still

surgical meths

To stick the pads to the patient, buy the white surgical tape from a

pharmacy , or you can use the gel pads that are used in the

hospitals ,acupuncture and pain clinics, but these have to thrown

away and renewed for each patient as the gel is in contact with each

persons skin

Another note, the BLACK side of the MATS ( when mats are supplied

with a grey on one side and black on the other ) are to touch the

patients skin for more direct contact

Thank you

Regards
