Hi Phil,

Just a thought. I bought a 17 inch screen. If you intend to travel by air with it, it can get cumbersome. I was only able to find one good model of luggage to take in on planes. It worked with SouthWest Airlines, but I had problems with Alaska Air and others. If I had to redo it, I'd choose the smallest one available. If you plan on using it in an office, a big screen is great.

Dear Phil,

I recommend Sager, but I did hear that in Budapest another brand is being recommended that is a little slower, but much quieter- no roaring Sager fans, but I don't recall the name of it because I'm not getting one - I like the speed of the Sager. Fair warning: the Sager runs hot and loud, but I still like it the best- it's highly responsive and superfast. The 17" is my favorite, but the 15" with the super clear screen is also very nice.

Purchase of a laptop for QXCI

I am about to purchase a new laptop (possibly Dell) for my QXCI. I have a couple of questions perhaps some of you may be able to answer (Barry, and others). Will a Pentium M work as CPU for the QXCI? Would a 17 inch widescreen display be ok for the QX on a laptop. What resolution would be needed to ensure the QX panels are large enough to work with.

Pentium M is fine ( pentium mobil tech version of pentium 4 ) .

COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS TO RUN QXCI/SCIO CLASP SYSTEMS

Minimum Specifications

IBM compatible lap-top or desk-top computer (lap-top recommended for portability)

Active matrix preferable for lap-top viewing (1280 x 1024) 15 inches or larger.

Windows XP professional is the official recommended platform and other platforms may yield inconsistent performance, Windows XP for all new systems (XP professional version is the recommended platform). This means if you buy a new system it is recommended you replace XP Home with the Professional version. While the QX compatibility problems with XP Home are said to be resolved, I had to give up on a new HP XP Home system and install XP pro before Clasp would load.

40 GB Hard Drive or greater (select the faster SATA drive over the ATA)

256 MB RAM minimum, 512 for SCIO and 512 MB for new systems ("DDR pc2700" or above)

1 GHz processor or higher for new system, Pentium 4 (cache performance implications) not Celeron

Soundboard & Video Cards of highest possible quality for SCIO applications

(ATI or NVidia video cards with at least 64mb memory)

Recommended systems are Dell, Sony, Compaq, Gateway and most other consumer popular systems. Not recommended are HP systems because of my personal experiences with HP. If you are paying more than $1500 for your laptop

(Unless for a larger 17" or higher screen) you may be buying more than the QXCI needs.

Most new systems will not have the older IEEE 1284 EPP (25 pin printer) port which the QXCI must interface to. Do not use a USB converter/interface. Use a single port EPP Parallel "PCMCIA" card to match the IEEE standard. See www.superlogics.com web product SPP-100, as an example.

We suggest that you do not have any other programs running on your system and restrict concurrent applications to Windows and CLASP. Do not expose your CLASP software to contamination via internet connectivity (viruses).

We also suggest flat panel displays to minimize extraneous radiation

I spent a bit of time in QX Ltd. Office in Budapest after the conference

and got chatting to Levente (spelling?), Bill's programmer, about

laptops and he recommends Toshiba P25 S607, which he uses and finds

best suits the SCIO. A student and colleague did some searching and has

found Toshiba P25 S670, which is another good one. Alas, both have 17

inch screens and rather heavy and expensive - over £2000 in the UK.
