One screening program, TeenScreen, developed by Columbia University, has been

administered to more than 150,000 children in 42 states and the District. The

state of New York plans to start screening 400,000 children a year, and the

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Menendez (D-NJ) and Durbin (D-IL)

today announced legislation that aims to eradicate the devastating effects of

postpartum depression on American families. The legislation, introduced in the

Senate earlier this week, proposes grants to better increase education and

access to screenings for new mothers and to increase research into this

difficult illness.

Legislation that would expand mental health screenings and care for U.S. troops

deployed to combat received the unanimous approval of the Senate Thursday and

now heads to the House of Representatives.The bill calls on the military to

conduct a more thorough pre-deployment assessment of service members' mental

health, including a more complete mental health history. If symptoms of a mental

problem are indicated, the measure would require that service members be

referred for further evaluation to a qualified professional with experience in

assessing mental health.
