I'm not sure you have to suffer from an illness,to understand the debillitating effects of it.I know my partner,who'd only been living with me and my 2 kids for 3 months,when I collapsed with depression.I got him to read the posts and he supported me through it all.And encouraged me to go and see Dr Peatfield,despite the cost of that,and the meds.He still says my health comes before money,and he's right. We all felt like that at 1st,it's like opening a floodgate,and feels like coming home,because it feels right and comfortable. I had polio at the age of 5 and now that I am in my 60's the nerve damage is evident in my hands and one leg. In Sept 07, I had fusion done from T10toL5 due to a 54 degree lumbar curve that was getting worse. I was in the hospital for 4 nights and recouperated at home over a couple of months time. This surgery really relieved my back pain. I felt that prescriptions written by the doctor are not balanced ones since numbers of medication are more that required. e.g. prescribing diclofenac injection in addition to tabs and gel for a simple backache. That much is not required. This is only one example. There are many other cases like this. This is increasing the cost of the illness and also predisposing the patient towards unwanted risks of medications. Surgery was one month ago, and she's recovering at home. I'm writing to you because my daughter had pain -- sounds familiar -- in October. As someone else on this list reported, the pain led to a diagnosis of scoliosis. It was pain that occurred while she was walking, and it would go away when she stopped. That wasn't normal, so we went to the pediatrician about it. An x-ray led to a scoliosis series and a diagnosis, then a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. The surgeon told us that scoliosis itself was painless -- sounds familiar, too, doesn't it -- and that sometimes a bone tumor or other problem could produce pain. To rule out those conditions, the surgeon prescribed an MRI of the back and a bone scan, as well. Both were negative, and the suegeon was careful to explain that surgery was being done because of the scoliosis and not because of the pain. I noticed that your daughter's doctor ordered an MRI. And that it was up to us if we wanted to fix his 48 degree curve. To think it over on our way home. Other wise we would just wait to see how he is in another 6 months. So we are going to Shriners Hospital for a 2nd opinion. I felt lost with his lack of help. We saw Dr. Carl in Albany for the surgery, and got a second opinion from Dr. Hresko in Waltham, Massachusetts (Boston Children's). I think a second opinion is a good idea, when one is making a big decision like this, and trying to understand new information. Actually, for our second opinion, we had a particular question we wanted to get more information on. As it turned out, the 2nd opinion was in agreement with the 1st, but introduced another option for the surgery, so it really was helpful. I honestly don't understand why orthopedic physicians will say that scoliosis does not cause pain. It makes me crazy because when I was a young girl diagnosed with scoliosis I was told the same thing and I never had a bone tumor. I have been in pain for years. (I am now 63yo and post 6 scoli surgeries and now have a reason to be in pain). I don't believe that when I was in my teens the pain came from the scoliosis per se - but I do believe that it came from muscle contraction and spasm and from the fact that our bodies are not in alignment - which can cause muscle contraction and spasm - perhaps this is where the pain is emanating from. Perhaps you can discuss this with the doctors who can possibly recommend physical therapy, swimming and or massage. I pray that you will find some answers. Couldn't even say that we should do the surgery. It has been a whole year with no answers. Sounded like he wanted his cure to get worse before he does anything. We were already told that it will never get better only worse. The poor kid has no live now sitting at home. Even going to school is painful. This is a kid that loved sports. Just hard to watch him in pain ........ Guest guest Posted March 10, 2009 Report Share Posted March 10, 2009 I completely agree with this that the docs think it doesn't hurt. But, it's crazy that they say that. Do they have scoliosis? I love it when docs say that it doesn't hurt, or it shouldn't hurt, when they don't even have the disability. It was like that when I had a baby...oh this and that won't hurt. Huh??? Anyway...I have had 2 surgeries for scoliosis and am in need of a 3rd (which I'm not going to have because it's a bad surgery and may or may not help) and let me tell you, scoliosis hurts! Maybe not necessarily the scoliosis itself but it's what the scoliosis does to the body. The bending of the spine, the moving and tearing of muscles, the moving of internal organs by your back, sciatica, etc. It's a constant, ache that just doesn't go away. After my surgeries, I felt much better and I would do it again. But, now that I'm almost 30, I've developed another problem in my lower back. So, now I'm in constant pain from that. But, the way I look at it, it could be much worse and if this is my adversity I have to live with, I'll take it. But, I just don't agree with the docs view on scoliosis not hurting. Guest guest Posted March 14, 2009 Report Share Posted March 14, 2009 I agree with you totally. I went through that " scoliosis isn't painful " deal for years. I was checked for every other possible reason for pain and it always came back negative. I have a curvature that progressed approx. 10 degrees in a year. And that's when my pain started. So, put 2 and 2 together and voila, you have pain from a curved spine. My pain was from horrible muscle spasms on the outside of my upper and lower curver. Even when I finally found a great surgeon who decided to perform surgery, he was very skepticle about it reducing my pain. He talked about a pain cycle being hard to break, blah blah. Well low and behold, 6 weeks after the most horrendous post surgical pain I could ever imagine--I think it was extra bad for me because I'd gone so long with the pain and muscle tightness that when my spine was moved quite dramatically--he got a 60% improvement--my spine objected and the pain was nearly unbearable. But 6 weeks later I was off pain meds completely and sitting comfortably for the first time in over 13 years. I was so happy. Until 2 years later when the rods broke and I was back having more surgery. Now, a year later, I'm still in pain and on morphine because, I think, of the fusion to my pelvis and the long screws he used to keep my pelvis in place. I will eventually have those removed and hopefully have less pain. But I've suffered for so many years and it's all because of scoliosis. I don't even have a super big curve. I was 55-45. I'm now like 20-20. I look great. But I can't move very well. The surgery sucks but it's better than before. And I bet my surgeon has a different opinion about scoli and pain since he had me for a patient. I can't believe I was the first who came to him in pain and got better from surgery. I stalled alot but that could be from other reason also. It had been swollen to the point that my doc was saying that I might need surgery. Not now! HCG resets your Hypothalmas which controls your pituitary which controls all your hormones. Thyroid is hormone related there for it can be 'reset' also from the hypothalmas. I actual read it could basically cure my thyroid problems. So my thoughts are because i was on meds to boost my thyroid(from too low) & my thyroid was getting 'reset' (to normal) the meds boost it to hyper & it swelled. So doc had to lower the dose. & next round I will do w/o meds Look it up online though it's very interesting information. search 'HCG & (hypo/hyper)Thyroid' & read up on the subject. I also learned it can possibly do the same for my polycystic ovaries (PCOS) Which i will be in 7th heaven if it does cuz i will be able to have kids. Never thought i'd be happy to have a menses But i did start one on my own (w/o meds) this month, the first time in 10yrs. I'm in total amazement with this diet. I lost 6 lbs in 27 days.I have started again with the homeopathic version since the shots did not seem to make me lose very fast and i felt terrible. My curve was around 50 degrees and they reduced it to 13. I have done very well for the 30 plus years since that surgery, got married, had three children, and have done pretty much everything I wanted. The good news for you is that experienced scoliosis surgeons have so much better technology and skills than they had thirty years ago. You need to go to the Scoliosis Research Society website and read everything you can about your condition. They also have a physician referral system to help you find some doctors that you can set up consults with. See at least three different doctors before making any decision. Make certain they do nothing but scoliosis work and ask to speak to previous patients. Before you go, make a list of questions to ask the doctor. Bring your parents, or someone you trust, with you to these meetings to help take notes as there will be too much information for you to digest yourself. Write it all down. Take a deep breath and try to relax. There is help out there for you and going to the SRS website is a great place to start getting that help.
