Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (excluding federal holidays), we post summaries of recent vaccine news coverage " Record Number of Children Vaccinated " Washington Post (07/30/04) P. A3; Brown, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Thursday that last year, 79 percent of American children received the full round of recommended immunizations by the time they reached three years of age, an all-time high for the United States and a nearly 5 percent increase over 2002's vaccination rate. Overall, the lowest immunization rates last year were found in big cities and in Western states, with Colorado recording the lowest rate at 68 percent. Connecticut had the highest rate of immunization at 94 percent. The new report covers vaccination against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, Haemophilus influenzae type B, polio, and hepatitis B. The CDC noted that uptake rates for two new vaccines that were not included in last year's overall calculation--varicella (chickenpox) and pneumoccocal conjugate--have been rising as well. CDC Director Dr. L. Gerberding said the figures are encouraging, but she warns that there are still roughly 1 million American children who have not been fully immunized. " This is the record year ... but we still have challenges in protecting children from these devastating diseases, " she said.
