Health educators present summit for kids' sake By ANNE GEGGIS Staff Writer Last update: 08 May 2004 More than 400 people converged on the Volusia County Health Department Friday for a health summit aimed at improving area children's lives. Senta Goudy, executive director of the House Next Door and a member of the One Voice for Volusia coalition, which helped organize the 2004 Prevention Summit, said she was overwhelmed by the turnout of exhibitors and visitors. Exhibitors ran the gamut in human service agencies, ranging from the Child Care Resource Network to Volusia Teen Court. Joy Ratcliff, a case manager for Community Based Care of Volusia and Flagler Counties, attended the summit with a number several of her colleagues. " There's a lot of good information that we've been able to gather, " she said. During the event, four speakers conducted hour-long " mini trainings " on varied subjects, including a talk on children and psychotropic medicine given by Kathleen Vacchelli, a nurse practitioner in psychiatry who practices in Ormond Beach and Palm Coast. Vacchelli said giving children drugs such as Ritalin, antidepressants and anti-psychotic drugs has been controversial. She referred to British studies last summer that found children taking the antidepressant Paxil were more likely to commit suicide. " Unfortunately, what it means is that we're going to lose a few, " she said, citing a higher suicide rate among children who are not medicated but suffer from depression. " It's better that we get these children on antidepressants. " Aaditee Hepburn, a Volusia County school psychologist, said she found the session informative. But she has concerns about the amount of medication shaping a new generation. " My only hope is ( before going on medication) that they have a comprehensive family evaluation and a comprehensive medical evaluation, " she said. anne.geggis@...
