Guest guest
But first, I had my media training last night and am the official Chicago Pegasys/Hep C Awareness spokesperson. Two weeks ago my platelets dropped from the 112,000 - 124,000 they have held at all through treatment to 69,000. I did extensive research on what possibilities there were for me to try. Platelet production is dependent on Calcium and Vitamin K. Sure Interferon destroys platelets, but if you can keep them producing (I thought) maybe I could pull the count up by adding Vitamin K (which comes from the sun and in Chicago winters, it's a rare day when you have sun). So I added Vitamin K to my regime and increased my calcium with low doses that I took with the K a couple times a day. My platelets were up to 86,000. I had carefully read Roche's guidlines and even spoke with a nurse at Pegassist. Their guidelines state if platelets drop to 50,000 you go to half dose interferon...if they drop to 25,000 you get pulled from treatment. I stuck the guidelines in my purse before going to County today. The intern looks at my counts and tells me he has to put me on half dose because the pharma's guidelines stated under 90,000 for two weeks you go to half dose. Excuse me, but what pharma's guidelines are these because I have Roche's guidelines right here and that's not what they say. He said those were Schering's guidelines. In utter shock I stated that I wasn't on PegIntron and here are Roche's guidelines. He had the audacity to tell me that he had never read Roche's guidelines and could he keep the copy of their guidelines. Can you imagine that he had never read Roche's guidelines? I'd also like to know if anyone is on PegIntron, what the inserts in each package state as to treatment changes with the various levels of platelets. It is so sad that we can't trust our health to those medical professionals who are supposed to know about treating health issues.
