Date: Thu, 15 Jan 2004 05:21:06 -0700 Dear Editor, Bravo on your excellent editorial on Dec 29, 2003 - " Pharmaceutical companies find new ways to reach anxious parents -- go direct”. We know it is unlikely that industry will regulate itself, and now we learn by sad experience that the FDA has more interest in protecting industry than the consumer. Perhaps it is time for the consumer to restrict the power given to the FDA through legislative efforts. I believe a ban on DTC ads for prescription drugs would be a good first step in resolving the problem of a drug industry that is totally out of control. New Zealand, the only other industrialized country in the world who legalized DTC advertising of prescription drugs, has realized it's error, and will most likely end this practice. See: http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/328/7431/68-c). Meanwhile, the overpromotion and shameless advertising of Ritalin and other ADHD drugs as if they were as harmless as M & Ms has led to an unprecedented number of children now taking stimulants which are chemically similar to cocaine. Furthermore, " Family Circle " will no longer find place in my family room - the family they promote - the " take your pill and be happy family " (Prozac for Mommy, Viagra for Daddy, and Ritalin for little Junior), is a bit overreaching in my opinion. I much prefer the intellectual stimulation I've seen lately in the SF Chronicle. Thank you! Regards, Dawn Rider President, A.S.P.I.R.E.
