I am a new comer to this Group but have gone thro' the hell of

coming off Seroxat/Paxil.

It appears to me that the overwhelming concentration of the current

messages on child suicide is diverting the debate away from the

wider issues:-

-do they work?

-why are they so damn hard to withdraw from

-what are the long term effects of such an intense interference

with brain function.

Let's not forget the cleverness of the companies involved

here.Getting the debate focussed onto one area and then debunking it

is a classic manouver-employed by the tobacco companies for years.

Please widen the discussion and forestall any such moves.

Part of the current focus on children right now is because the

surpressed research on children has gotten our foot in the door. I

truly believe that the research on adults isn't much more favorable

than the research on children is. But at the moment, all the news

outlets -- especially in Great Britian -- are focused on the reports

about children. Finally there are articles in which those who are

leary of SSRIs are NOT treated like quacks and hysterics. Finally

people are listening and giving second thought to handing these drugs

out like candy. The drug companies don't want the studies on children

being scrutinized because they know that the studies on adults reflect

almost the same information. The drug companies don't want the safety

and effectiveness in children issue opened because they don't want

people to take a third look at safety and effectiveness adults. But

if the FDA won't admit what they have always known -- that these drugs

are not safe and effective -- at least for children in light of the

current information and discussions, there is no hope that they will

ever admit it. And if they won't stand for kids now, they will never

stand for the rest of us.

Just a little aside, this whole debate on the safety and effectiveness

in children was an outgrowth of an investigation in England into the

withdrawal issue.
