Paxil and breast cancer

This is what my friend Rob will be posting soon on his SSRI Citizen website.

I am particularly outraged at this information because my sister was just

dx'd with cancer in both breasts. She took Paxil for just two weeks 5 or 6

years

ago. Hell would be too good for the executives at GSK who are no better than

the Nazi bastards who maimed, tortured, and killed millions of people. God

help GSK if I get breast cancer.

Paxil Use and the Seven-Fold Increased Incidence of Breast Cancer

(For a brief review of the “Paxil-breast cancer link†in a friendly,

news media format click on the link above.)

Looks like we just keep going from bad to worse, eh? Research done by

Cotterchio of Cancer Care Ontario found that women who took

Paxil saw their risk of breast cancer increase by seven times — even

when other possible risk factors were fully accounted for. (See the New

England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 342, June 29, 2000, p. 2003) A second

study by Cotterchio pointed out that Paxil stimulates prolactin

secretion and is a potent inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 2D6 enzyme —

both factors in an increased breast cancer risk. (See American Journal

of Epidemiology, Vol. 151, May 15, 2000, pp. 951-57)

However, the breast cancer did not show up until 11 to 15 years after

the initial exposure to Paxil. “The 10 year delay … suggested to us

that the drug(s) (ed.: there are others) might be acting as tumor

initiators,†said Dr. Colin Sharpe, the lead researcher, in a news

release. Dr. Sharpe cautioned that patients “need not panic and throw

away their medication.â€

Not panic?! Are you kidding? The chances of a woman developing breast

cancer — even if they don’t take Paxil are — what, one in eight?

Personally, if I were a woman I wouldn’t touch Paxil even if the

studies had concluded there was only a two-or-three-fold incidence in

the increased rate of cancer. But here’s the real kicker: the studies

included women who had taken Paxil for as few as two weeks. (As I sit

here writing about this and collating this information I think about

about the millions of women GSK marketing is now poised to suck in to

treat PPMD with Paxil.)

Does GSK know about the Paxil-breast cancer link? Oh, you better bet

they do. The December, 2000 issue of the American Journal of

Epidemiology contains a letter from GSK (then SKB) that questions the

validity of Dr. Cotterchio's conclusions. (Imagine that!) See:

American Journal of Epidemiology, Vol. 152, December 1, 2000, pp.

1104-05 (letters to the editor)

This valuable information needs to be spread far and wide.

Hope everyone does their share in exposing this need.
