I've had grade 3 chondromalacia patella for about 25+ years now. I've

done it all: PT, lateral release for both knees, more PT, arthroscopy

where they go in and smooth the cartalidge out, more PT, realignment

surgery in my right knee, more PT, and more arthroscopy surgery with

water PT. The last arthroscopy was done a year ago this last June.

It's not a condition caused by your back. It's where the cartiladge

that covers the back of your patella (knee cap) is soft and when yo

uhear that grinding, it's basically getting shredded as it " glides "

over the joint, specifically the trochlear groove. My realignment

procedure was done in 1989 and has prooved to be a good solution for

my right knee. My left knee it behind in progression as it has just

now gotten quite bad, even with PT. The PT guys I was going to said

that it's as good as it will get right now. One thing one of the PT

guys said was they have found that the hamstring absolutley must be

very strong to support your knee and alignment. This is new info as

of 2008, I believe he went to the conference in the fall, if I

remember correctly. Anyway, it' snot connected to sway back or

scoliosis or other back issues other than due to having to walk with

a poor gait becasue of knee pain, that can cause some back

discomfort.

lower back pain with significant degenera tive disc disease at 3

levels, bone spurring and stenosis, but my knee pain was not from

that.  I didn't have stabbing pain but my knees did get very sore

with any activity. I went to an orthopedist, who diagnosed patellar

syndrome--my upper leg muscles were weak, especially the inner thigh

muscles and the outer thigh muscles were spasming, pulling the knee

caps more to the outside of my leg. The displaced knee caps were

causing the pain and grinding sounds when I flexed my knees. Physical

therapy fixed that and I just have to continue the exercises.

Have you tried or asked for water therapy for your knee(s)? When done

correctly, you first will stretch and then strengthen. It's a great

way to get your knee better. My PT guy got me as far as he could. He

said without something else done (surgically) I'm as good as it will

get. :(

It feels just as good on the knees. My knees, however, still felt hot

to the touch after water therapy. But the water therapy is about all

I can do for them any more.
