Okay, this is just scary. I've never heard of this. So it's possible for

someone to hack in to your computer whenever you are online?!

What kind of protection is there agains this?

it won't happen through an email list, it's your

connection to the internet. there is a free program

called zone alarm, you can download it at zd.net. once

you install it, it'll alert you when somebody tries to

ping your computer etc. but noone will be able to get

into it.

Critic: Brain Research Misdirected

April 18, 2002

The federal government is wasting billions of taxpayer dollars earmarked for research into mental illness, says pioneering brain researcher Dr. E. Fuller Torrey.

An ardent critic of of the National Institutes of Mental Health, Torry makes his claim and mocks some NIMH projects, such as studying the brain of pigeons, in an interview with Morley Safer to be broadcast on 60 Minutes Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

“Schizophrenia and manic depressive illness alone cost the federal government about $40 billion a year,” he says, referring to the burden mental illness puts on a wide variety of social services. “Yet, the part of the federal government that is supposed to be doing research on these diseases has, by and large, ignored them.”

Torrey says the government agency should instead focus directly on finding better treatment for severe mental illness.

Hyman, the former director of the NIMH, tells Safer that some of the money his agency gets is assigned, by law, for areas other than severe mental illness. He also argues that the big picture is what’s important.

“Fuller’s focus on the most severe is like saying to the heart institute that they can only study heart attacks, but not cholesterol or high blood pressure,” he says. “I’m in the business of making sure people with mental illness get the best science for them.”

Torrey, whose sister is severely schizophrenic, has spent his entire career railing against the way the government spends its mental health research dollars. He’s also criticizes the field of psychiatry for dealing mainly with “problems of living” rather than severe mental illness.

“I think a lot of the resources of psychiatry… should be going to people with severe mental illness…[not] …why is your third wife divorcing you or why were you passed over for office chief?” he tells Safer. “I’m not saying those are not problems.”

When not tilting against the mental health bureaucracy, Torrey heads up the Stanley Foundation for Brain Research, where he directly studies severe mental illness.

Torrey caused a furor in the early 1970s when he argued that schizophrenia was a disease of the brain and not a condition caused by family behavior – a theory dismissed by most psychiatrists at the time. His view proved to be correct.

Very, very scary. But probably not the government? I mean, it sounds

like a kid doing it - the government would probably do it in such a way

that you didn't know that someone had actually gotten into your

computer? Maybe make it look like a hard drive failure or something. Not

that I have any technical expertise - but very, very weird.

Take care,

Meryl

Oh, my God, ...you know, our computer's been going up and down lately,

too. For no reason...hubby looked into it, couldn't find anything at all

wrong (or at least he thought). Now, I'm wondering...I'll have to check it

out with him tonight, see if we can figure out what's been going on.

I was online for ages the other night and zone alarm blocked over 80

'somethings', LOL.

I have also been told a lot of these are sites etc. just info. trying to go back

and for or something. In other words, if you turn on your zonealarm and it

blocks alot, dont panic, most of it is probably normal 'traffic' from different

sites etc.

Wow Im so technical! LOL!

Re: (unknown)

Oh crap, a modern day horror story! I'm so sorry that happened to you !

I also want to thank you for bringing this issue up.

I was just talking to my brother-in-law who is quite knowledgeable about

computers. He said that some of the messages that people are receiving from

firewall alerts might actually be cookie attempts instead of an actual

hacker. Something about websites put cookies on us or some such.

Thanks Kathy,

Jim's B-day was April 14th and mine is around the corner, next

Sunday. Jim's brother invited us out to eat at the Outback Rest. for

a combo celebration today (Sun.)and the BEST gift of all is how well

had behaved. We were able to enjoy it, plus actually

ate a DIFFERENT menu and cheesecake with choc. syrup. We also

attended the entire hour at church this morning and then celebrated

our Fiesta Festival afterwards, its Fiesta time here in San ,

a big event every year. So, is worned out and slept EARLY,

toileting has been good, too. I say what a day for him. This week

Special Olympics, praying for more good behavior, sleep, and him

eating. Thanks always for listening. Take care.

I'm probably going to send one of my co-workers to the theatre so

that she could take to watch it this coming Saturday. She is a

Physical Therapist and has emergency knowledge with some special

needs experience. This will be the first time to do this. My other

son Rick who is 15 has been invited to a wedding and my dh and I are

planning to attend with some of my friends that are from North

Richland Hills in the FTW area and are coming down to San .

So, I'm going take advantage of this offer as a respite. That way

Rick could get a taste of a Tex-Mex wedding & some music. Boy, wish

you were here to help out. People out there should be happy, there is

a special person like you willing to help out. Take care.

Yes very weird and scarey someone can do this to others,

and for what? I don't get it. $80 to get it fixed,

that could be using for something else, but....

Aren't computers just so much fun, cookies, back door viruses...

so much to learn, so little time and so much money to fix... *sigh*

I was gathering that, piece by piece. Those of us who are suffering from this disease know it can be very difficult for our family members/loved ones as well as it is for us. We would certainly like to help in any way we can. You will find that, while none of us has all the answers, you can usually find at least one or two in the group have gone through what you and Greg are going through. -dz-
