Guest guest
I recently started a vegan (no animal products) diet mostly since my husband decided to – we have been doing it since February 3, 2006. Since starting the diet, he has lost 10 lbs (20 more to go), has been able to stop all his blood pressure meds, and has stopped his Lipitor. His BP is low, his cholesterol is 140, and his fasting glucose went from 124 to 100. As for me, I have five autoimmune diseases, and possibly another one – Crohn’s disease, which was giving me constant abdominal pain. Since stopping dairy products, which I was eating every day, the abdominal pain is much better. As for inflammation, my SED rate (measure of inflammatory activity in the body) is down in the normal range for the first time in 4 years. Am I feeling better? No, not at all – my knees are much worse as I am tapering off of prednisone one mg per month. But the pain/inflammation/swelling in my knees is apparently not caused by an inflammatory disease – it’s from oseto arthritis. My left knee has some other issues (two floating bone chips and a torn meniscus) which are being fixed arthroscopically (hopefully) in a few weeks. After that I will be heading towards knee replacement as soon as I can get off prednisone. My husband attended a 10-day wellness session here: http://www.drmcdougall.com/ He learned about the vegan diet and the many large epidemiological studies which support that idea that it is most healthy for humans. There is a lot to read at the website – including a big diatribe against Fosamax – this doctor (he is an MD) believes that Fosamax and like drugs do not build “good” bone – they build brittle bone – and they do not reduce the risk of fracture. Anyone have anything in their own experience that supports or negates this: MJ Some foods have been shown to decrease inflammation in the body, whereas others tend to increase the possibility of inflammation. For example, animal foods contain fats that have been found to increase an inflammatory response. But studies show that eating high-fat fish, such as mackerel, bluefish, or tuna, that contain omega-3 fatty acids enables the body to make products that tend to decrease the inflammation. Guest guest
My son is 27 mos. And we used Dr. Pakula initially, then to Dr. Rubin and just began seeing Dr. Weintraub. We liked Rubin but feel that Dr. Weintraub is a better fit for my son. Feel free to contact me off list if you need further info-Dr. Rubin was a positive experience for us-I just needed more of a “plan of action” and we seem to be getting it with Weintraub. Guest guest
LOL....i feel as if it isn't me I'm talking about.....I told my mom day before yesterday and got the BIGGEST SHOCK of my adult life. She actually supports my decision. She said she had seen other family members struggle with their weight all their life and she didn't blame me one bit. She was worried about my finances but I advised her THAT shouldn't be HER concern but mine and my husbands. Then she was worried about me having it done so far away from home.(I didn't tell her Mexico). I just told her I was being met in San Diego CA and would be taken to the hospital from there. I just eliminated where the hospital was. (I know she couldn't accept that)..So now I am ANXIOUS...I think the fact that I wasn't telling her was what had me dreading the whole thing....She says she thinks my sister will support my decision also but I did ask her not to tell my sister that I wanted to tell her when I come back. My sister is also overweight but much taller than me so she doesn't look it as much. My mom probably weighs about 135. She's never been overweight. There was only 2 out of 13 siblings that isn't and she is one....Anyways I am really hoping my sister will decide to have the surgery after I do but she is always so skeptical and waits to see results before going ahead with something so that will be an extra incentive on my part for making this band work like it is supposed to. I look forward to meeting my " banding buddies " ....please keep in touch. VICTORIA Re: (unknown) Hi : I am having my surgery on 4/12. Only two weeks to go! See you there Vivian & ! Guest guest
Hi , You want to know what I did last night?? LOL I went on Dr. A's website and printed out his credentials, all about the hospital, and all about the procedure. I have it in a 10" x 13" manilla envelope addressed to my Dad. I plan on mailing it on Thursday the 27th of April and my DOB is on the 28th so he should get it just in time. I am going to write him a letter also stating why I am doing this and why I am telling him this way. If I told my Dad what I was doing I would never hear the end of it so for me this is going to be much better. As for my Mom.... they are divorced now for about 30 years and when she divorced my Dad she also divorced her children so I don't have to worry about her!! My Dad will probably be pissed but thats okay. This is about ME!!!!!!! Guest guest
Tammy, That is how I felt….I didn’t think of doing that. But I am glad I went ahead and approached her about it. I had asked her a couple of weeks ago about something I needed to know. (we are allergic to some anes) and I had to have the exact meds of course for Dr. A…..anyway I think she may have already suspected that I was looking into it but she never said anything….Gosh I am real sorry about yours and her’s divorce that is not right. But you know there are more moms than you realize that does that. I have two wonderful daughters (step) who was divorced 1 ½ years ago…..I am gaining sooooo much. I love these girls. I have a son 15. so I am 14,15,16 in ages and I love having kids to “”control””’ lol and mother. I wish I had more. As I was only able to have 1 and blessed with him I cant understand a mom turning her back on her children. My relationship with my mom was bad until about 3 years ago. I was daddys girl but my mom was always there. We just didn’t understand each other. Now we have a mutual respect and I finally have my mom friend. Anyways sorry for rattling. I was gonna leave a letter with my son to give my mom but now I don’t have to. It has really helped on looking forward to my surgery…..good luck….you may be pleasantly surprised about his reaction when he finds out. Guest guest
Hi Lynn, Sounds like the post pain I had after my second TKR. I had to lie in bed (or sit up) for 1 month post op due to a complication I did to myself and after when I started PT with my usual gung ho attitude, I had the Charley Horse feeling you mentioned. 120 that sounds too good to be true. I have graduated PT and I was at 105 which the PT. lady said was amazing! I wonder if you are being too aggressive with your PT. I also had some calf pain but after awhile it worked itself out. My muscles were sooooooo weak post op and also pre op for that matter. I still have a "giving way " in my right leg at times if I tire my muscles out and was told that isn't the knee, it is due to weak muscles. It has since eased away but it took awhile. I found out hot baths with epsom salts in the water helps ease the muscle strain. Remember to wait till your incision is totally healed over with no open areas before immersing in the tub though. I did think I was going to go crazy though with the quad tightness and some nights cried myself to sleep but now that it is gone I am doing much better. Good luck with the diminishment of the pain and stiffness. It will work itself out in time. Contessa -- (unknown) Hi All! I don't post much, but I finally had TKR on 2/27/06. Doing absolutely great. I was at 120 degrees at just over two weeks. Now.........my thigh really hurts. It feels like a charley horse all the time. And both calves are hurting. I put my TED hose back on to see if that would help. I have two more weeks of PT. I'm wondering if I maybe pulled a muscle or something? But, the calves? Yesterday I got a cramp in my thigh that made me almost cry. Don't know what is up. Thanks. Lynn Messenger with Voice. PC-to-Phone calls for ridiculously low rates. Hey maybe we can ask Karlie and Caprise where the good Margaritas are??LOL I CAN'T WAIT!!!! Oh how much do I want to lose? I would like to lose about 120 pounds. I am 244 right now and only 5"2' tall. I am a huge ROLLIE POLLIE!!!! But 20 pounds right now would be awesome!! I think if we take it 20 pounds at a time it will be easier to comprehend. Did you have a donor ligament on the knee you had done in Feb or was that the one in 2001??? I've been reading all the posts for weeks. And now it's my turn - yikes! My TKR will be on Wedn 4-5-06. I'm of course, quite scared, but also very excited! 1 question for everyone? What are the TEDs hose like? DId you have to wear knee-high or whole leg? And did they have toes or no toes? I'd like to get an extra pair now before surgery. I hope ya 'all will think of me with prayers on Wednesday! Thanks for all your words of advice and help!
