Before I was diagnosed with PA I visited my oldest sister and she asked

me to go walking with her one evening. My feet really HURT, I was

miserable and I didn't know why. She went looking for tennis shoes the

next day and I bought a name brand pair of shoes for myself. I'm not

into name brands but was so miserable I gave in and went for it this one

time. Oh, they felt so good!!! Supprt and padding just where I needed

it. Instead of " Shoe City " or " Payless " I had gotten (and still have)

Rockport's Prowalkers. They were almost $100.00 but were/are worth every

penny.

Take care,

Hi all --

I wish I could wear Birkenstocks! The post below has

resonance for me as I was diagnosed with PA by a

podiatrist. My regular Dr. did not figure out what

the problem was, and the orthopedist he referred me

too could not either. When my feet got so bad I could

hardly walk on them he sent me to a podiatrist who

picked out the PA right off. He also measured me for

orthodic inserts which I wear in my boots, and they

have made all the difference. I'm sure that in some

cases, as below, buying a better make of shoe will

turn the trick, but in some cases you might be better

off seeing a podiatrist.

For me I found the most comfortable sandles were called Okabashi, they have pressure points in them and they are the only shoes that will keep my feet and legs from beginning to hurt after Ive been on my feet for longer than an hour or so. I bought mine at Eckerd's drugstore, they were about $8.00. I have tendonitis in the arch of my right foot and it get's very painful at times. I have a pair of $100 New Balance tennis shoes and after 30 minutes of walking my foot is killing me, but with the sandals Im fine. I also have some knots across my ankle and on the top of my foot, these happened early on in the disease, when they were unable to stop the joint destruction. After starting mtx, the knots went down some but they are still there and sometimes they will hurt also.

Should have said in my earlier post what type shoes I found that work for me.

(thx for reminder !) I have sandals by Ecco, clogs by

Haflinger, and some _real_ sturdy walking shoes by Ariat. , since you're in

Poulsbo maybe you'll appreciate this; I call the Ariat shoes my

" Seattle " shoes. Well that's where I got them -- I lived up there for 18 months

till this fall -- and folks in Seattle seem to wear a lot of that

type. The heels are about an inch thick and ought to last me about 25 years,

from the looks of them. I wear the clogs most, though. Now that I'm in

Arizona, I miss my Seattle wardrobe -- I'm one of the nuts who actually liked

the rain and cooler weather.

Thanks for the information on shoes...but what about dress shoes? I do some solo

work in the area and need something. I've been wearing some very low black flats

but they are beginning to hurt. Any suggestions? Last year I could also wear

some Dr. Scholls lace up shoe...now I can't get the right foot in them and when

I do force it, the shoe feels twisted. I don't think it's the shoe but the foot.

Some of us are sure blessed aren't we. Again thanks, I copied that list to start

looking...I need something closed up in the winter with the snow. so will look

for that Seattle shoe also..Donna

Well, I would wear boots, but I am active in my church and do some up front stuff like solos and promoting mission work, things like that. And I still like to wear a dress once in a while...So I need to at least try to find something for a little while longer. Donna

Even without a hurting toe I've had trouble finding shoes to fit me comfortably

As for dress shoes, they -- makers like Ecco, Dansko, Birkenstock, s,

Haflinger, Ariat, etc. -- are making more and more shoes than can pass for

" dress " . Also, SAS (San Shoe, based in Texas), SoftSpots or Hush

Puppies might have something to suit you; a Hush Puppies low 1-inch heel was

about the last dress shoe I could wear -- might still be able to if I could get

it extra wide. Lots of

these are advertised on the Internet, too, so you might check them out that way

Hope this helps.

Hi ,

I have a daughter named . We adopted her and her four siblings from

Costa Rica in 1981.

I have a great pair of sandles I bought last summer. The upper part is

leather suade...bottom is about 2-3'' of rubber...the color of an art

eraser. Well, I've lived in them for a year now...even in the winter if I

wasn't going out...Actually I got them at a Walmart and it was the best $20

I've spent in a long time. I need to look for another pair or something like

them. They even seemed to support my arch. I need to find something for

dress wear.

Ive been using a flat black shoe but that is getting hurtful. So for dress I

am back to square one. I also have a wide pair of tennis/athletic shoe put

out by Dr. Scholls that I wear for casual wear. But I live in those sandles.

Thanks for your imput...I may try some running shoes. Keep in touch...

Happy Easter...Donna

I just noticed your e-mail address...Are you Jan Brosic from Onterio

there. But most of the time I wear running shoes.

Even in the winter.

In the summer I wear wide sandals with adjustable straps.

I like to stick to leather and they are softer.

Best of luck finding shoes.

I agree with the message from some others about custom

orthotics. Because of some serious problems, my custom

orthotics were about $350 and my insurance paid ZERO. (there is

a specific exclusion in my policy for such things!)

Nevertheless, it was the best expediture of that kind I've made in a

while. Now, three years later, I still wear the same pair and they

look like they will last much longer. So overall, the cost per year

for daily wear is pretty inexpensive. I switch them to every pair of

shoes I own and wear them at all times. I can really tell the

difference, not only in the feet but in legs, hips, back, too.

As to shoes...I wear comfortable walking shoes, usually Rockports

or Reeboks. Expensive but worth it. I often take out the

shoestrings and replace them with different, jazzy colors and/or

" springy " laces I don't have to tie. Since I wear a lot of purple, the

laces are often purple and I look color coordinated. This takes

away from some of the looks of " sneakers " when I am more

dressed up. Another tip is to look for the low boots that are ankle

length. They look like the old fashioned boots for women in the

1800's. Mine lace up so they can open wide enough to

accommodate my orthotic inserts. They are black leather and I

polish them occasionally to keep them looking good. I got mine at

a Western wear shop but removed the little fringe thingy that was

laced in. I don't dress western so it was out of style for me. I find

that these boots go very well with dress slacks and longer dresses

and skirts, especially if I buy the " broom " skirts that have pleats

like the 1800's styles. My walking shoes and my boots are my

only shoes for the last 3-4 years. I would like to wear " regular "

shoes more but the discomfort is not worth it. I might mention that

my shoes and boots are usually over $100 a pair but I wear them

continuously for 3-5 years so I get my money's worth. It is hard to

remember that when I try to figure out how to get the original cost

out of the budget! So no closets of 100's of shoes for us! (I even

had a student remark that she noticed that I wore the same shoes

all semester--I taught college--no matter what outfit I wore!) She

wasn't as tired of those shoes as I was~!

Good luck to all. Keep sharing what works for you and we can all

learn something!

GREAT, MARIA

I'm glad you found some shoes that will work for you. I am in search for another

pair of sandles and a dress pair of shoes that don't pinch this right foot of

mine. The left foot is still fairly good, but my right one does me in.

I am going to try some of the other shoes that have been mentioned by some of

the other PA people. Keep in touch...donna

Donna,

I too do a lot of solo work at church. I wear Birkenstock black clog style

shoes in the winter and sandals in the summer. If it's a funeral or

something more formal, I will wear flat pumps, but they have to come off

within an hour or so. My feet swell so much. I have found that only

Birkenstocks will do for me. And though they cost around $100, they last a

long time. The quality is excellent. Now, I live in California, so a lot of

people wear them here. I'm not sure where you are from.

Hi Amy,

I've been taking a poll as these e-mails come in. I think the majority of PA's

are wearing Birkenstock shoes. I'm gonna get me some. My feet and ankles have

been swelling something terrible lately. It's getting where a flat just kills

and like you, those babies have to come off in an hour or so. I found a pair of

earth shoes at Walmart here and have worn them for a year and they are still

good. I even wore them in the winter with a pair of sock.(sandles). I think I

may go shoe hunting this week. I do need something a little better looking than

the ones I have now. By the way, I am in Michigan. In the winter I would

probably have to wear the clog or something enclosed because of the snow.

Where in California are you? I have a neice in Valencia, and a couple of cousins

in San . I'm about 45 minutes North of Grand Rapids. Keep in touch...Donna

Hello!

About shoes, I've found that the Stegmann clogs are wonderful. They are very

warm in the winter because they are wool. They are more comfortable than my

Birkenstocks. I know of a Birk web site that has wonderful discounts on

closeouts. E-mail me if anyone wants to know what it is. They are usually

about $20 off the retail price.

Donna,

The clogs are great! Because I have such big feet, I was a bit nervous when

I first started wearing them. But now, I get lots of compliments, so I just

wear them and hardly ever think about my feet until I get home at night and

put my feet up.

I live in Fresno, which is in the middle of the state. South of Sacramento

and north of Bakersfield.

I'm going to start looking for some clogs and maybe some sandles..the ones I

have are still good but are looking a little beat up. I need a nicer pair of

sandles for dress. Thanks for the insight. Tonight my feet are so swollen it

hurts to walk..the ankle on the right foot is kind of throbbing. Such is

life...well life in our part of the world.

When my feet hurt I uaually go barefoot (in the house) but if forced

to run errands I wear Stegmann's which are pretty ugly wool clogs but

they actually do keep your feet warm in the winter and somehow cool

in summer. I find any shoe with a back is bad. I like mules and

higher heels actually make my feet hurt less because my heel is not

slapping down on the pavement... My entire PA scenario started out

with heel pain and plantar fascitis which I thought came from walking

on marble floors all day in high heels. Little did I know...

Hi all --

After two years in the equivalent of Army boots my

podiatrist recently gave me the OK to go with

sneakers.

It will feel good to take twenty pouds off my feet!

He recommended New Balance running shoes for the times

that I wear sneaks.

For what it is worth --

,

I have always had wide feet, but since the PA, my left foot is almost as

wide as it is long. I didn't realize that New Balance carried wide

widths until recently. For my upcoming adventure, I purchased a pair of

New Balance s, they have the look of hiking boots but have a low

top. They are also waterproof. Very comfortable, I love them. The

$100 price tag wasn't to bad considering that I usually pay $60 to $80

for a pair of Nikes. A couple of years ago I found a pair of Nike

Basketball shoes on sale at a Penny's outlet store. They had very thick

cushioned soles, they were wonderful. They are probably similar to the

running shoes, you've mentioned. Made to absorb the impact. Believe

me, they are worth every penny. Becky

SAS has stores in Vero Beach, FL all around the Wash. DC, VA and MD area.

SAS shoes are also sold in other shoe stores, especially dept. stores. They

also come in slim width. I wore nothing but SAS shoes when I was Nursing in

the hosp. My feet are narrow sticks and the padding in the shoes are great.

I worked 13 hr. straight every wk. end and my feet never bothered me. Good

luck with SAS. Betty in VA
