Hi Suzanne!

I did the same thing when I filled the prescription. I couldn't sleep that

night either. So the next morning I took it and felt really good for about

3 or 4 days but the agitation started. The last 3 days, I tried taking it

at 11:00 am instead of 6:30 after breakfast, and the agitation is abit

better, but not gone. I guess I will have to live with that until I can get

off it. I felt really good at first when I started taking it. Lots of

energy, the swelling is down in my hands, feet and ankles, not so stiff in

the morning, and the pain is minimal. I only had to take Tylenol a couple of

times a day instead of every 4 hours or so. But now, after almost 2 weeks,

the pain is coming back, especially in my hands and feet. It's hard going

to sleep at night, and that is adding to the agitation too. I don't see my

doctor again for another week, and then I will get the prescription for MTX.

I'm not sure if i should call him about the Prednisone tomorrow or wait

till I see him on the 2nd.

It is so frustrating! I just want to feel better! I want to feel normal,

but is that possible? Here I go feeling sorry for myself again!

Debbie,

When I first started taking prednisone, since I had the rx filled in late

afternoon, I started it around 6:00 pm and continued to take it around 6 pm.

I had a lot of trouble sleeping, along with getting very overheated. (Can't

quite say I had night sweats, but did get to feeling pretty hot.)

I continued on this schedule for quite a few weeks till I had a discussion

with my rheumy. He told me to take prednisone in the morning! Not at night.

That it was a diurnal (think that was the word) drug and worked best taken

in the morning, following a person's normal day to night pattern.

Hope I expained that right. Anyway, when I changed when I took it, I felt

much better and slept better! Having that little push of energy is much more

appreciated when at work, than when trying to sleep!

Doing all those chores is great for you to do ( IF ) you feel good enough to

do them..This helps you to feel like your used to be self ...which I think we

all welcome a day like that...before RA stepped in.

My DR. old me to LISTEN to your body...When I feel good and have a less

painful day....do the things you feel like doing as long as you're not putting

TOO MUCH stress on any particular joint.

Louise from Huntsville,I've been missing your post...Hope all is well with you.

Debbie,

That's a shame the prednisone didn't continue to keep you pain free. It was

a miracle for me. Of course the side effects that started as time went on

were so good, but I sure felt " normal " as far as joints and movement go,

during the time I was taking it.

Hope something works for you soon!

You were certainly smarter than I was in taking the prednisone. It never

occurred to me to take it again the next morning and take it on that cycle.

It was quite a few weeks before the doctor clued me in! (LOL)

He figured out I was taking it at the wrong time when he asked me how much

stiffness I had in the morning. Stiffness?, says I, I don't have any

stiffness when I get up. I just swing my legs over the side of the bed and

off I go. This from the woman who could barely walk after she had been

sitting or laying down for any length of time. I would stiffen up to virtual

immobility. He must have gotten quite a laugh over that one!

I don't know anything about prednisone treatment in children, but my

brother-in-law took it for an extended period because of colitis. His doctor

says that's why he now has osteoporosis.

Prednisone is a steroid and so is cortisone. I've pasted in a response from

Dr. McCandless addressing the danger of using cortisone on children:

Dear Gaylen: With an equivocal IgG test I would use monolaurin rather than

a prescription anti-viral. The rash you talk about sounds very much like a

herpes rash (no, neither parent has to have herpes!!). Cortisone will make

almost any dermatological inflammation go away temporarily, but it does not

heal anything, and I would advise against using it for anything except rare

emergencies where breathing is impaired, especially in children. It does

go in systemically and plays hell with the immune system and and eventually

the endocrine system if you use it consistently, while not addressing the

real problem.

Hi Al,

After I had Wyatt, I noticed some brown raised spots on my chest. I thought

they looked like moles. My gyne told me that sometimes the sudden change in

hormones or body chemistry can produce these. He said that they could be

removed rather easily, but they are essentially harmless. Just another

branding after having a child, I guess. They haven't grown and I'm the only

one who notices them. I would suggest that you talk to your dr about them

anyway. Can't be too careful nowadays with the threat of skin ca. Just

think of them as beauty / handsomness marks.

I was just watching that commercial for Progressive Insurance. It shows a

girl using online voodoo to get even with her ex-boyfriend. Do you suppose

that I could use this? LOL. I could take care of a lot of his problems for

him, if you know what I mean. Wyatt will be ok. I guess its hard when you

finally see the true side of people when you love them and they don't love

you back. I know how he feels.

And yes, Jim is single. He's actually a very nice guy. Used to be an MP in

the Marines and now works in security in Pittsburgh. Love a man in uniform.

Anyway, I think that it is nice to just keep in touch with him right now and

just see what happens. No expectations. Its so much easier that way. Can

you tell that I don't trust men in that department? I hope that you are

feeling better and getting some sleep. I haven't had much myself. Couple of

hours at a time, just like you. I was wondering, what type of work do you

do? I used to work the front desk in a medical office until I was fired for

not being able to keep up. This was after they fired 3 people and gave me

their jobs on top of my own. Anyway, they did me a big favor. I took the

opportunity to file for disability and got it. Now I don't have to worry

about the hassle. Anyway, its time to close this book. Hug and the

kids and I hope that you can get some rest soon.

Love and Hugs

I haven't ever been on prednisone, Al, but I would make it my first

guess as the culprit. Facial acne is a very common side-effect of high

doses of prednisone.

Sorry!

LOL! Since you were a model, maybe instead of Big Al we should call

you Pretty Boy Al.

Not to worry, your skin should return to normal when the prednisone

dosage is reduced or when you have gotten off of it. Then you could

resume your former career. I love that commercial with the handsome

gray-haired fellow making a big show of himself before he does a

bellyflop in the pool. There is still modeling work out there for you.

Hope you have a good day, too!

Gretchen,

I had no idea that the Prednisone could do that, although I knew they were bad

stuff. I wish I'd known sooner. He is coming down off it slowly, and it did

swell him up horribly. They were prescribed by a rhumatologist that just didn't

" know what else to do " , as you said.

I will tell him about the Arnica.

The link you sent me for the muscle cramp med. didn't come thru. Could you send

it again?

Thanks so much for all you help. Thank you " Support group " for all your help.

Just talking to some of you and reading all the helpful info. helps.

I'm not sure, but I 2was told anything 15mg or higher was considered a

high dose. I have been on 25-40mg daily for 9 months now and I can tell

you, I'm about tired of the side effects, but like you, I can't get off

but for different reasons. If I don't take the prednisone, I don't

breath, period.

Either way, it stinks to be dependent on a medication of any kind let

alone one with so many adverse side effects.

Renate,

That's a nice stable dose that you're on. It's a little high but not as bad

as it can go. I was on 60mgs for three months. But like Althea said, you

do have to be weaned off the Preddy. It's not a dangerous amount. A scary

amount is 60mgs and higher. I developed a round shapped face and puffy

cheeks. There was a lot of weight and water gain. I was quite miserable

when I was on the high dosages ... 20, 30, 40, etc. When my dosage gets

lower I am in a lot of pain, but my body adjusts to the dosage decrease.

Maybe or a will be able to give you more information about Preddy.

Be careful about Enbrel .. might be ok .. might not .. read the Hopkins

Hosp. web page for more info .. look for it on the net .. one gal went partially

blind after doing Enbrel .. I read her note on an E, in the group today .. I

myself am pretty confused as to what to do .. am tapering down presently on

prednisone 17.5 till thur., then to 15 for two more weeks, then 10 for 2 wks.,

then 7.5 for 2 more weeks, then hopefully back to 5.. I've heard that 5 per day

is the supposed safer dose long term .. but I am not a doctor ..

Renate, you are on what is usually considered a medium dose of

prednisone. If you could taper off of it sometime soon, that would be

the best for you. Some studies have demonstrated that there is an

increased risk for bone loss and fractures with long-term use of a dose

as little as 2.5 mg per day.

I understand that it isn't easy. Have you asked your doctor about it?

Dermnet NZ

" Systemic Steroids " :

" Systemic steroids vary in strength. The beneficial effects as well as

the side effects are proportional to the dose taken. Steroid dose is

commonly characterized into low dose (<log/day of prednisone), medium

(10-20 mg/day) and high dose (>20mg/day). Treatment continuing for more

than 3 months is regarded as long term, and results in the majority of

undesirable side effects including Cushing's syndrome. "

http://dermnetnz.org/treatments/systemic-steroids.html

*************************************

Medscape

" New Role for an Old Friend: Prednisone as Disease Modifier " :

" The American College of Rheumatology guidelines for the prevention and

treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis recommend that all

patients on glucocorticoids receive calcium and vitamin D.[27] In

patients who will receive 5 mg/day or more of prednisone for more than 3

months, a bisphosphonate should be given, but with caution in

premenopausal women. Women on long-term treatment taking more than 5 mg

of prednisone per day and who are hypogonadal may be offered hormone

replacement treatment. If the bone mineral density is not normal, with a

T score less than -1, a bisphosphonate is recommended. Implied in these

recommendations is that patients on less than 5 mg/day of prednisone are

at a small risk for reduced bone mineral density and fracture. "
