About Hepatitis C Hepatitis C is the most common chronic blood-borne viral illness in the United States. Chronic HCV ultimately leads to cirrhosis in 20% to 30% of those infected, with 10% of those progressing to liver failure or liver cancer for which liver transplantation is the only possible proven lifesaving measure available. Over the past decade, the incidence of liver cancer has increased greatly. There has been a 41% increase in new cases and a 35% increase in deaths.
