Guest guest Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Comfortable clothing, perhaps a cute hat to cover her head because she most likely will lose her hair, a nice blanket to bring for treatment, a good book to read, nice lotion because a lot of cancer patients end up with dry skin due to the treatments make sure it is hypoallergenic since her immune system will be weak, I would probably say not to many plants since depending on how low her immune system gets from the chemo she might not be allowed to be around plants due to the mold that often times grows on them, there is also a website called choosehope.com and its got a lot of great gift ideas for cancer patients. So hopefully that is helpful. Lots of Love (JAS, 21) Quote
Guest guest Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Also there is a great organization called Chemo Angels, a person basically adopts you for the duration of your treatment, they send you goodies and support, but the best part about it is often times your chemo angel is a cancer survivor. So helping get hooked into something like that might help too. Quote
Guest guest Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Hi, At the infusion clinic where my daughters gets her IVig treatments, there are a lot of cancer patients there as well. They have patterns there to make (knit or crochet) fun hats for those that have lost their hair. They also have order forms to buy really cute scarves to wear in place of a hat when they dress up. I bet you could could get some patterns and other ideas off of a cancer website. A bed buddy is one of those rice filled doo dads (lol) that you warm up in a microwave and put around your neck to relieve stress, but it also helps to put one of those on an arm before blood draws. Also, a homemade CD of her favorite music to listen to while she is going through treatments. Music to uplift or maybe music that means something to the both of you. Just before dx her husband of 20+ years left her and his family for a younger woman. I can't be there, physically, for her since we moved to NH, so I have sent her gifts when she had her first surgery and first chemo treatment. Of course, we chat on the phone and IM. She will have 6 chemo treatments and then start radiation. Hopefully the 6 will do it. I am hoping that you all could share some ideas of gifts to send. I just sent her a mini rose bush in a ladybug pot. Ladybugs for luck on the port and chemo #2, both scheduled for tomorrow. I don't want to just send flowers with each treatment, I would like something different. With so many people of this list I figured someone would have some awesome, creative and different ideas. Ladies and gents any suggestions please?????????? Thanks to all. Take care. Patty Quote
Guest guest Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Hi , Im very sorry to hear about your friend, as for a gift I read in a magazine somewhere to cheer somebody up you take a bunch of notecards or pretty piecec of paper and on each one, write something really nice about that person, and put them in whatever kind of container you want, and tell her to read one a day, so that everyday she will have a new thing to feel good about!! hope that helps!!! Guest guest Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 HI Patti, So sweet of you to be there for your friend even though you are seperated by many miles. I was trying to think of " comfort " gifts. Maybe a special or funny coffee cup with an assortment of flavored coffee or tea? Antother idea might be a basket with some different bath stuff. candle, soaps, lotion, gel mask, warm socks or slippers... I know your budget has been tight, so you might want to check out bath and body works. They are having their big annual sale right now. I bought stuff at 50-75% off. And Walmart is clearancing all of their christmas stuff. I bought a foot spa for just $3.80 and it works great! Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 This is one of the best ideas I have heard of in a long time. Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Hi : Thanks so much for these great ideas. I already went out this am (in the snow:) and purchased her a nice soft fleece blanket (with hearts - Valentine's Day stuff is out already!). I think I'll send the blanket with the lotion and/or hat. She's hard to buy hats for (she hates them). She is already losing her hair (she has purchased a wig), but says everything is uncomfortable. I'll have to find something really soft, maybe even a kerchief type thing. I knew I would get good ideas here! Thanks again , you're awesome. Take care. Patty Quote
Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Hi : I was looking for something like this for her. Although, at this point, she is uncomfortable with 'everyone' knowing she has cancer (and that her husband left her). It's so hard no to tell our mutual friends, especially when I know they would help her and the mothers of multiples club has 200+ members (lots of helpers), but I differ to her wishes. Thanks again . Take care. Patty Quote
Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Hi : Thanks for the great ideas. I wonder how I could get an order form from a place around here. I'll have to check the phone book or good ole Internet for a soft hat. I love the idea of the bed buddy. She is having a hypnotherapist make her soothing CDs to listen to while undergoing chemo treatments. Visualizing the chemo eating the bad cells,(guided imagery) etc. He's made a couple of great ones already. Thanks again for the wonderful ideas. Take care. Patty Quote

Thank you for your kind words. I love the idea of the paper and nice thoughts about the person. I will definitely do this one. My mind is racing with good thoughts of her already. Maybe I'll get some friends to write something nice about her too, but won't say why, although they may question to much about it. We'll see, but I can write many thoughts of her without anyone's help, she's a sweetie! Take care. Patty Quote
Guest guest Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Hi : I am trying:) I really wish I was still in VA for her. I miss her and it's hard to hear how much she misses me, especially with all that's going on in her life. GMTA........The first goodie I sent were bright flowers in a big yellow smiley mug. Figured she could use the mug after:) You are right about that budget, darn it, keeping the faith that a job will come along soon. That's an awesome idea about the basket of goodies and even better about the B & B Works and Walmart clearance. I will check online first before I venture out in the snow again LOL. It came down pretty quick today. Some poor person's car broke down smack in the middle of a two lane (busy) road. I felt awful about not stopping, but can't send Mark out with his past stroke or myself with my heart and hernia, especially with no insurance still. They just looked sad:( Well, going way off subject here......Thanks again for the great ideas . How's Aundrea doing? How's that building coming along? Getting excited yet? Take care. Patty Quote
Guest guest Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 -Patty, How about a homemade relaxation basket.. fill it with a couple of dvds, a couple of books, bags of popcorn ready to pop and some of those boxes of movie candy. Throw in a couple of scented candles to set the mood. You are an wonderful friend for caring so deeply. I hope your friend overcomes all that is ahead of her.... hugs Helen and (8,systemic) -- In , ThreeMayEmeralds@a... wrote: > > Hello Everyone: > > I have a dear friend (back in VA) who is undergoing treatment for a rare > aggressive cancer. Guest guest Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Hi Helen: Thank you Helen, she has been a dear to me with all I have gone through. I think I will put some of these great ideas from everyone in a basket, wrap them individually and have her open one at each treatment. Popcorn sounds good. Might just be something she can tolerate eating. Take care. Patty Quote
Guest guest Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Oh, Alia, you are too kind, thank you. I think you are a good cookie too:) I have this visual of her daughter painting her toenails right there at the treatment center. She'd do it too, lol. I love all these ideas! The slipper socks are a goodie too, some of them are so soft. I put them in the girls' stockings this year. Will have to head out to Kohls for some more:) Take care. Patty Quote
Guest guest Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 Patty - You are amazing!! We need more people in the world like you. I am glad she has you as a friend. What about sending her little tins of her favorites goodies? I;m not sure if food agrees with her, but maybe some mini candy bars or some butter cookies would help her through her treatments. Maybe a care package with some bring red nail polish and nice lotion would help. Or some of those soft slipper socks! I love those.... Good luck!
