food additives: antioxidant TBHQ

Dear list,

as important as it is to eat health food - it can also be an issue to dismiss

agents from nutrition that are pushing children prone to seizures.

I found this informative post on a list for allergics and thought some of our

list might benefit.

    319 TERT - BUTYLHYDROQUINONE

AR = adverse reactions

USE - antioxidant

ORIGIN - petroleum

COMMENTS - nausea, vomiting, dizziness, collapse - a 5g dose is fatal.

TERT - BUTYLHYDROQUINONE (TBHQ)

ORIGIN - derived from petroleum

FUNCTION - antioxidant, often used in combination with other

antioxidants, such as BHA (320), BHT (321) and PROPYL GALLATE (310),

because hydroquinone quickly turns brown when exposed to the oxygen in

the air.

EFFECTS

small amount of TBHQ have caused

nausea,

vomiting,

ringing in the ears,

delirium,

suffocating feelings and

collapse. 

A fatal dose is 5g. 

TBHQ was last considered by JECFA in 1990.  JECFA extended the

temporary A.D.I. of 0-0.2mg/kg of body weight until 1994 when the

results of ongoing long term toxicity studies in rodents should be made

available for evaluation. 

they also requested additional data on

genotoxicity to be obtained using current techniques.

A.D.I.     0 - 0.2mg/kg body weight (temporary to 1994).

typical products & maximum permitted levels:

dairy blend, edible fats, edible oils, reduced fat spreads, lard,

dripping, margarine, salad oils.  200mg.kg

essential oils 1g/kg
