okay, I couldn't drink the kefir by itself so I was drinking it in a fruit

smoothie with a banana and strawberries and a tablespoon of sugar - 2 1/2cups

everyday.... so now I am perhaps healthier but also 5 lb heavier.

I tried a packet of Stevia Sweet yesterday with a couple of drops of vanilla.

Tastes okay... much better than just straight kefir. No excess calories except

the kefir.

Anyone else use Stevia .. any other low cal / low sugar ideas. I did use honey

for a while - it was natural but still calorie-laiden.

thanks in advance.

Betty,

I, too, use stevia and think it is a great way to sweeten things without

the calories. I've recently been using Truvia and I like it as well,

although I probably ought to do some more research on it.

In regard to the weight gain. I've experienced this along with several

others I know that drink kefir and after a couple of months the weight

stabilized again.

I use agave nectar from Trader Joe's as it's USDA organic, which means no corn

fructose syrup.  I've never been a big fan of stevia as I've always found it too

bitter no matter how much I use.  I probably like mine sweeter than the average

user.

Thanks, everyone.

I'm definitely going to try the agave nectar. Not sure where I'll find it in

rural Nova Scotia?

my husband tells me we used xylitol while we did Atkins a few years ago.

I will try dissolving the stevia powder in water and adding by dropper to reach

a nice sweetness without the bitter taste of overuse. Thanks. that is a great

tip!

Betty,

Where in Nova Scotia are you?

I live in the polis Valley, where I am an Alternative Health practitioner.

Do you make kefir regularly? Do you happen to have extra grains? Maybe we could

swap kefir grains for my product, Colloidal Silver.

I'm going to have to develop a taste for stevia cuz I noticed that agave nectar

is 60 calories for a tablespoon!

Hi Betty Ann,

I am not fond of sugar or any other sweeteners as they leave an unpleasant after

taste in my mouth and I question the health benefit of those sugar replacement.

I like my kefir sweetened with fruits or raw fruit and vegetable juices without

the sugar. The two complement one another quite well in terms of taste and

nutrients.

If you have time, visit this site for many kefir recipes with juices. I had a

good time trying them out, excellent results.

Terry,

Will you e-mail me separately about the benefits of colloidal silver and what

I typically used a banana with my smoothies. A ripe banana would give me

nutrition and sweetness all together. Sometimes I would put a bit of carob

powder or some berries in too. I usually put in my omega 3 oil (the banana cuts

the taste of the flax seeds) and I also often use molasses for iron (it's

non-constipating and has really helped my heart rate come down--something I've

been needing to happen for years). So my smoothies can be quite interesting. Now

I can't have kefir anymore. :( My son is allergic to just about every part of

milk--even goat's milk. So I'm stuck with kefirless smoothies.... Sigh.

Mrs Reynoso,

Perhaps water kefir will go well with your kefirless smoothies, lol.

hi Ann,

i finally found agave nectar at our local Superstore.

it tastes great in the kefir - 1 tsp with a few drops of vanilla per cup of

kefir. It has lots of possibilities in other foods too.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I dont have anything really helpful to add but you could also use xylitol as

well. I add a small bit of semi-sweet choc chips to my smoothie along with nuts.

Sometimes I stir in granola cereal after the mixture has been blended. When I do

this, I count this as breakfast or complete meal. It is very filling and like

you said it is laden with calories. My 7 yr old loves this also.

I use raw almonds to the mixture and blend which adds a nice healthy flavor. The

choc. chips are not healthy but they sure do make it taste good. I am addicted

to chocolate and go into withdrawals without a little. All I need is a little

though. On the other hand, I dont drink coffee, lol.

I found something called Truvia at Walmart for the same price range, so I would say probably so...

Stevia

I have found a 50 pkt box of stevia (TOTAL wt. 1.75 oz) for 7.49. One pkt is a serving size. Is this about the going rate or can it be found cheaper? Thanks, Darlene

When I first bought stevia a few years ago I would pay twice that much

for a package with half the amount of servings. I never liked it (tried

different ways, different brands, all tasted bitter, not sweet) so

haven't been keeping up on the prices of it now that it's all over the

place.

Hi Bee,

Hope all is very well. Can I have Stevia everyday and is there a limit to how

much I can have on the Candida diet? I like to make lemonade and lime pops with

it for a sweet treat, but I want to make certain it is not considered a cheat.

Also, why is your Lemon Flan dessert recipe considered a cheat? It seems to

have the same ingredients that some of your Candida diet friendly dessert

recipes have.

Thanks Always!!

+++Hi Tammy,

Yes, all is very well with me. Thank you.

If you have small amounts of green leaf stevia every day it may be okay for you.

For some people it makes them crave sugars more, by feeding their sweet tooth,

so be cautious about it.

Some people cannot tolerate any stevia, since it is also a carb. The reason it

is included is because it is used is such small amounts and not very much is

consumed per day.

There are also the same issues with lemons and limes, so that's why my recipe

considers it a cheat. They are lowest in fructose, but we have to remember

fructose is one of the worst kinds of sugar for anyone, even when they are

healthy. That is because of how the body processes fructose compared to other

kinds of sugars.

If you are trying to find a dessert your taste buds haven't changed yet, which

takes time. It is easier and better to " bite the bullet " and not have anything

sweet until they do.

For cravings and withdrawals from such addictions see:

All the best, Bee

Are you using milk kefir or water kefir for this recipe?

I'm reading of people using stevia in their kefir drinks. I've discovered a

dandy taste treat:

few fresh stevia leaves (I live in Washington state and grow it in the

backyard)

few fresh mint leaves

fresh fruit

kefir

Yummy! Some times I just use the stevia & mint leaves and it's very good.

Hi Shari,

I just picked up a couple of Stevia plants today. Do you have your plants

in the ground or in a pot? I live in Upstate NY and wondering if they will

survive winter outside or if I should plant in a pot and bring in?
