Well... I've been experiencing some hair loss recently. I just realized the

vitamins I was taking didn't have any minerals in it so I switched real fast.

It could be stress because we are under alot right now. My system has changed

so much, no telling how I will respond these days lol.

Hair loss

Hi Everyone,

This is the first time I've posted. I had my MGB 8/30/00 I'm 10 months

into weight loss with much success. I have lost 120 lbs. with Gods help

because I've basically

have been able to anything I want with no problem.

My concern now is that I have been having a lot of hair loss, my hair is

long and

curly, but when I was my hair I have goobs of hair in my hands.I have

lost so much

I could have made a wig if I keep all the hair. I'm taking my vitamins

and prevacid

daily. Is there something else I should be taking? All my labs seem to

be good, my pcp doesn't seem to be concerned. I don't have any bald

spots or anything like that.

Quit worrying. Nothing but time helps the problem. I would trade all my hair,

every single one to have had the weight loss you have had. That is wonderful.

Your hair will come back--it just goes into shock for a while and nothing you do

or take will make any difference. Try a different style and add body building

products to it to make it look fuller.

Hi

Congratulations on the fantastic weight loss! My experience with

hair loss is that it started at about 4 months and stopped at about 6

months. My hair was thin and fine to begin with so I didn't have

much to lose. Don't know of any other supplements to take to help

with the hair loss although I've heard that biotin helps.

Why have you continued the Prevacid?

We're also supposed to take citrucel 2x day and tums everyday, not

that it helps with hair loss but we need it for our tummies.

Where in NJ are you from? I was raised in Bordentown (exit 7 on the

NJTpk) and lived in the Little Falls/Wayne area in the 90's.

Hi , good to hear from you. You are my littermate, but you were

in a different part of the hospital than , Marsha, Amy, and

me, so I never saw you after surgery. I was the one at clinic from Ca

with lots of questions. I am so happy that you have done so well with

your weight loss. I know what you mean about the hair loss, it is

frightning, but I think mine has just about stopped, but then so has

my weight loss for the last month or so. Look for new growth, it

should be starting to come back already, although I kept losing hair

as long as I was losing weight pretty fast. I don't think there is

much help out there because I have been on the list over a year and

have not heard of anyone really stopping it if it is occuring. A hair

product called Nioxin has proved to help with non WLS patients that

are losing hair early, but I don't know if it would work for us,

because we have a totally different set of circumstances. I wouldn't

worry to much, you are young and had alot of hair, I am sure it will

grow back. Keep us posted on your progress, especially at the one

year mark. I know that my other littermates don't keep up with the

posts, but I try to, so I will give them an update on our long lost

littermate. We email each other every month or two about whats been

going on with each other. If you want to get everybody from 8/30/00

emails just email me at sumlinsr @charter.net no spaces.

Hi Bernardine,

I'm went back on prevacid because I was getting a burning sensation in my

stomach

about every 3 hours, when I would eat something it would go away. On the

prevacid

this doesn't happen. I've tried a few days not to take it, I do notice a

diff.My stomach just seems to always be grumbling. On the prevacid helps.

Bern,

I'm not the one that posted originally about continuing the Prevacid but I

also continue the Prevacid (twice a day if I eat something that doesn't

agree with me). I figured that it basically protects your stomach from

things and that was a good thing. Also, I had reflux and a hiatal hernia

before surgery so I figured it was a good precaution for me and my doctor

agreed. I plan on staying on it forever probably.

Hi Marjory,

I'm so glad to hear from you. I never knew who where my littermates. After

surgery

I never saw anyone that was in clinic. How is everyone else. Has their weight

loss been a success?

Hey ,

I too take prevacid for the exact same reason you do! Only I found I can

take it every other day and still stay " burn " free! :o) I have to save a

buck when ever possible. LOL

I'm having lots of hair loss and I don't have alot of hair to begin with.

I'm about 5 1/2 months out and it doesn't seem to be stopping. I've been

trying to eat lots of protein things, but I can't eat alot at a time still.

I've tried the liquid protein from GNC, I'm eating tofu (yuck) and even had a

" soy " burger last night. The whole burger had 15 grams of protein, but I

could only manage to get half of that down. I'm scared to death I'm going to

be bald soon!!! Really, I'm not bald but the hair is everywhere. Any

suggestions? I'm doing very well otherwise...down 90 pounds.....

Sounds like you are doing great Marie! Great weightloss!! Congrats!

I " m losing hair too...I take the ZMA fuel every night...my vitamins, and lots

of protein. I just am beginning to think that this is a price some of us

pay.

I had pretty thick hair my entire life. Now I don't. It is probably medium

now, working towards thin probably...haha....Every shampoo, I have lots of

hairs in my hands. When I towel dry some, there are hairs there too....I

notice them on my darker clothing (I'm an unnatural blonde) and every time I

do my roots I cringe, just knowing I will be completely bald in a minute!

Hang in there! Even if your hair doesn't! Hope SOMEONE gives you good info

cuz I will borrow it gladly!

Marie,

I had my MGB in late Jan and my hair was very thin on top before, I

lost a lot of hair on top and sides, so much that I had a buy a wig. It is

starting to grow back like peach fuz, but still use the wig. I only hope

when it all grows back it will be thicker than before. There is nothing to

take to help. It is a shock to our systems, and a combination of loss of

vitamins, and etc. Just be happy the weight is coming off the hair will come

back, get a wig. There are a lot of them out there that are natural

looking. If I do not say no one can tell.

Good luck-- Rosemary Commisso (Jan 26

Dr. R mentioned Zinc for hair loss...I ran right out and bought some. I took

200 mg like he suggested and became violently ill. I paged him and he

answered me right away and said STOP the zinc. Some of us can't handle the

metals like others. I can take 100 mg with food with no problem but I have

not noticed it helping with hair loss. My hair comes out a TON in the

shower. I have started some regrowth around my face and I am at month 6.5 so

I guess we just have to suffer through.....in this case the end DOES justify

the means. Good luck.

Hi Marie,

I know how you feel! I too have very thin hair and it seems to be coming out

pretty fast! I am 6 months out tomorrow and have lost 105 lbs. I am fortunate

that I have naturally curly (kinky) hair so at least it POOFS a little. I am

very ready for mine to stop and start coming back in again. I have been told it

will..... just not sure when???

Good luck!

Marie, I lost a lot of hair. Nothing I did stopped it. But it started all coming

back in at about 9 mos. to a year. I'm about15 months out of surgery and It's

nearly all back in. Don't worry. You won't go bald.

Hi to all,

I am also having a lot of hair loss. I am down to washing it 2 times a

week, because it comes out by the hand full in the shower. I also keep it

up most of the time. I can really tell above my forehead. I am about 5 1/2

months out and I am just waiting for the re-growth to kick in.

same for me too...I started losing it around 5 months

and it stopped around 7-8 months. Now its coming in

again...Its not as thick as my hair was before but its

coming back. Just make sure your protein intake is

good, and I started the flax seed capsules and Vit.E.

I dont know if it helped or not...but I felt at least

I was trying something....

Good luck to you all.

Mine started falling out big time at 3.5 months. I had LOTS and LOTS

of hair to begin with, so now I am enjoying the thinness of it now.

I was scared for a while that it wouldn't stop, but I really think it

has slowed down. While I was in the shower at the Y I noticed that

not as much hair was falling out. I usually end up washing mine a

couple of times a week, once in the morning, once after a work out.

My best friend cut mine so as it doesn't need to be brushed very

much, so I've really enjoyed that, and I think it is saving me from

being bald.

Hi Marie,

You're not alone.......I started losing hair at 4 months post-op and

I'm now almost 15 months post-op and still losing hair. I

started wearing a wig about 7 months post-op. In fact my picture on

MGB Friends from the cruise is with me wearing a wig. My hair loss has

slowed and the new growth is coming in but my hair is really, really

thin. Sometimes it really depresses me but I just have to remember

that hair is only hair and my overall health is more important.

My long blond hair has ALWAYS been my crowning glory.....but not

anymore.....but I really don't care what people think. If I'm going

someplace special I will wear one of my wigs, or if I don't want to I

just go natural.

This same thing happened to me in 1986 after my hysterectomy but most

of my hair came back. There are so many really cute wigs now that

people don't know I'm wearing one unless I tell them.

I say don't worry about it and have some fun buying some cute and

daring wigs. Have fun with it.

Love,

Genz

Genz: I thought the one on the cruise was quite natural and cute. I would

not have know if you had not said something about your 3 hairs. Phyllis

Just my 2 cents.... I am 51/2 months out and I have not lost any hair.... I

do take biotin everyday... that is suppose to be great for the hair... so far

so good....

Sharon: I hope it doesn't but you are still not out of the woods yet. Mine

was gradual at about 6 months and I had a lot of hair. I have been real

careful not to put any chemicals on my hair since surgery and have had it cut

short so I don't have to use curling iron and have perms. It seems to have

slowed now. Phyllis in fla

Just remember to keep the hair or wig lighter in color, all dark hair does is

show scalp. I also recommend color and style change, it is expected with our

dramatic weight loss to want something new. Younger styles, brighter colors,

the hair dulls dramatically with diet changes. So go for what you feel best

Dear Robin, etal

MGB 01/02/01

Down 107 Lbs since MGB

I had a meeting with a nutritionist on Friday for controlling my diahria

(Orange Team with Airborne clusters). She also asked if I was loosing hair.

Yes - big time I replied. I told her I tried protein shakes with skim milk,

but it went right through me, as did juice of any kind.

Her response was to stick with high protein, even scheduled me for 5

meals a day (due to small input at any one time). She prescribed soy milk

(Silk brand) with a banana and vanilla extract. Natural Peanut Butter on an

English Muffin, , Tuna, Chicken, Turkey Breast, Natural Yogurt with Banana &

Vanilla extract, etc. (Lactose encourages diaheria) - stay away from milk

products and stick with as little fat as I can. Suggested I stick with what

I call the " Make Believe Cheese " - no fat etc.

Good luck to all (me too, as I've just started this regimine)

Regards, TommyB
