I haven't noticed a lot of hair loss, but I have VERY THICK hair. It was

long up until 2 months ago and I had it cut really short. Last week when I

went in to get a trim, the girl took a razor and thinned it for me. So

apparently I haven't lost enough to make any difference. It was still so

thick that it had not " OOMPH " to it. It does not that she thinned it. I'm

much happier with it.

Marie,

I am about the same as you my surgery was 3/7. I was having lots of hair loss

then I started taking zinc sulfate 220mg three times a day and it seems to

have definately slowed down. Make sure if you get it that it is the zinc

sulfate and not any other kind. I had to get mine on line because I couldnt

find it anywhere , not even at GNC.

I just did a search for zinc sulfate and found a company that sells it over

the web. It is pretty cheap , about $3.50 or so a bottle.

The zinc SULFATE I have been using has not caused me any stomach upsets at

all. I think I was expecting to have the same thing happen , so make sure it

says sulfate, not just plain zinc. hmmmmm i must have a cast iron stomach, lol

Phyllis,

You are so sweet. Unfortunately my three hairs are down to two.LOL

I guess I wasn't meant to have much hair....:-(

By the way I got me a new wig....it's short. My kids tell me I look

like Carol Brady on the Brady Bunch, the brats!!!!!!!LOL

So far I've spent about $500 on fake hair, so they better look

natural!!!!!!!

I've got to tell you a funny story. Last Wednesday Randy and I went to

a funeral for a man Randy used to work with. I was wearing my cute

little short wig and we were standing outside. The wind starts to pick

up a little and Randy put his arm around my neck to help hold my wig

on!!!!!!!! He was afraid it would blow off my head. I could just see

him running after my hair while all the people he used to work with

looked on.LOL Thank goodness it stayed put, but it was touch and go

for awhile. It was so touching for him to be so chivalrous and hold my

hair on. I really love that man, even after 30 years.

So, how's your hair holding up?????? Good I hope.

By the way, the day you were in town and tried to call but the phones

were down, someone busted a water main and it flooded the phone

company's Central Office. It was a big mess for weeks. Sorry we missed

you.

Love,

Genz~~~Just call me Slick ~(;-)

I was already wearing a hair piece before my surgery. This was one area I

did not have to worry about. I wear a custom made and fit hair piece. It is

expensive but last about 2 years and it clips on and I never have to worry

it will come off. The hardest part for me was to just make the decision to

do it. Once I did it now it is great. If it comes up most people tell me

they had no idea I wore a hair piece. When I got my first one people told

me I looked yrs younger and really I have to agree with them. There is no

reason to have to walk around feeling bad about your hair. It was the best

thing I ever did for myself (other than the MGB!!!).

  • 3 weeks later...

Ann,

I am almost 10 months out and I lose hair by the handfuls every time I

shampoo or brush. Everywhere I go, I see a trail. My clothes are covered, I

find it on my desk or in the sink all the time, and I try to be extra careful

when I cook to keep it outta the food.

Mine started at about 5 months but I had verrrrry thick hair to begin with

and wear it in a style that makes it look even thicker. As it started to

thin, I began to freak so I started looking for products that help. I use

Nioxin shampoo ($12 for a small bottle. Huge adjustment since I used to pay

$.97 for a big bottle of Suave!). I recently found a hair spray that I really

like too. I bought it at Salley's which is a local beauty supply house and

it's by Lamaur.....Vitamin E Hair Spray (ultra hold). It's moisture resistant

and holds pretty well even in the rain. I hold my hair upward and spray as I

let it fall, then push it into the shape I want so it looks poofy. It looks a

lot thicker than it really is but I knowwwwww the truth.

I did research on the internet and it says four things can cause a temporary

hair loss in women: having surgery, a sudden drastic weight loss (in excess

of 10 lbs/month), a change in hormones, or a nutritional deficit. Well, our

surgery can result in all those things plus I'm 50 to boot so the hormone

problem is compounded!

I got my doctor to put me on hormones for at least 6 months until my weight

stabilized. And I started taking my vitamins FAITHFULLY which I did not do in

the beginning (regretfully). Supposedly, since the hair loss stops when the

weight loss slows, I started eating a little more to keep the weight loss

under 10 pounds in a month. I know at some point in time I would reach my set

point and stop losing weight anyway, but I would rather lose a little slower

and keep some of my hair! It's tricky to try to lose enough weight that

you're happy with the weight loss while trying to eat enough so you don't go

bald!!!!!

I wish I had the magic cure but I don't. Those things have helped but I'm not

sure if we could truly prevent the hair loss completely. I think the answer

lies in the problem for those who struggle with plateaus......... to just be

patient and do your part in trying to change it.

Good luck!

Hi Ann,

before. My hair is shiny and healthy though and so I am not too concerned.

Hope things improve for you, it should, in time.

hair loss

I wonder how many of us have had this problem?? I started lossing hair

(handfuls) at about 6 months. I had longgg, very thick, hair. The hair

loss let up at about 9 months.I really couldn't tell I'd lost much

hair except it was clogging up the drain. Now at almost 18 months the

hair loss has started again!!! Worse than the first time. I went to

my PCP and had blood work done. Especially for thyroid and hormones.

I finelly gave up today and now have a veryyyyyyyyyy short cut. My

husband is still in shock! I like the cut but am concerned about my

thin hair. Anyone else with this problem??Oh yes, I take all the

vitamins and supplements Dr.R recommends.

Hi Ann !

I was having the same problems with hair loss, i'm only 1 year out, but when

I cut my hair short (previously long, thick and beautiful...arrrggg) it

stopped falling out. Now I have maybe 2 or 3 strands fall out when I wash

it.

Dont know if the weight pulls it out or what, but this has worked for

me....so far anyway !

Hope you have more success !

Sincerly,

I started noticing serious hair loss around 4-5

months. I am 9 months out and it is finally slowing

down. I was getting to the point that I was seriously

considering a wig. It is very noticeable. I had thin

hair to start with and now my ponytail is the size of

a few strands of yarn. It is pathetic. I am starting

to see a little bit of new growth around my face. I

hope and pray this is the start of good things! I

take all the supplements and try to eat a lot of

protein. Now I have to worry about it starting to

fall out again???? Has this happened to very many

post ops?

I have an appt in Oct to get it cut very short.

Ann,

You are not alone!!!

About 4 mths out I too began to lose hair. I am now nearly 7 mths

out...My hair is already short and I noticed that after I shower or if I

run my finger thriough my hair there is a small clump of hair that has

fallen out. I take all the suppliments and the flaxseed and fish oil

softgels seem to help, my hair is still thin, but not so much as

before...I am not sure what else to do either, my hair also is very dry

where it used to be prone to get oily often!!! I just leave conditioner

on it...

The Nioxin also has supplements available. The recharging complex has all the

recommended extras. It is about 10-20 $ for 45 days worth. Easy to take,

hasn't bothered my stomach. I went without for the last 2 weeks and the

hairloss escalated again. I never thought as a hair stylist that the hype was

real, but I believe now. Overman

Where do you buy the Nioxin at? I've looked for it...but can't seem to find

it. I'm almost 7 months out and had VERY thin hair to begin with and its

getting thinner day by day. I'm willing to try anything.

The point where you had the surgery is where the hair is breaking off. All

new hair growth will be weak until your body gets accustomed to the weight

loss. That is where the vitamins help, the strength of the hair follicle. The

color is altered as well, sometimes you need to change your color and perm

products and formulas. It is easy to tell that I do hair, but I am on LOA. I

did love the work. Overman

Marie,

I have been coloring my hair since I was 12 years old. I have VERY

thick hair to begin with and it began falling out big time at 2.5

months out. It stopped about a month ago. I like the thickness it

has now, so I'm hoping it doesn't grow back! Anyway, I met a woman a

couple of weeks ago when I went to clinic that quit coloring her hair

because of the surgery. I would never dream of it. I'll be one of

the little old ladies you see with blue hair! I color it about every

4 weeks. I have notice a difference in the way a color reacts to my

hair. My best friend is a beautician. I normally go with a Loreal

color called " Candleglow " , but this time I went a little darker, a

colore by Nutrisse, called light golden brown, and it turned out MUCH

darker than I had expected. As long as you continue to take good

hair of your hair, then I wouldn't fret about highlighting(although I

don't care for highlights). Infusium has a product, a leave in

conditioner that I swear by. I've been using it for about a year,

and I can tell the difference in my hair.

Marie, I mentioned in my last letter that my BF is a beautician. My

hair style changes, whether dramatically, or not, about once a

month :) Right now, I'm trying to grow it back out, so it looks

kinda rough. I'm not the kind to sit every morning and style it. I

like to run a brush through it and go, so I can't go with the more

fancy stuff. I don't think I look any older since I went darker.
