Guest guest
Tamara, Forget it and put it out of your mind.JRA is an auto immune disease and has nothing to do with diet or food allergies. There is no magic cure or a cure period. It's best to follow your ped rheumies advise and just simply tell people that try and talk you into things that while they mean well, you trust your doctor and there is ABSOLUTELY no proof that any of those things do any good and could cause harm and they are not FDA regulated. If you ever feel the need to try any of those things please talk to your rheumy first. Hugs Becki and 6 systemic
Guest guest
I have heard that JRA is allergy linked, but not specifically food allergy linked. As a matter of fact, when we last had allergy tested, he showed no food allergies, just enviromental ones (trees, grass, mold, dust). Some feel that diet does help arthritis and I do know that it does help gout - another type of arthiritis. Have you had McKenna tested for allergies? Perhaps if you did, you would feel better knowing what she is allergic to. There are people on this list who have used alternative methods - hopefully they will post soon. Sorry I can't help more, I am more of a traditional meds type of person. You need to do what you feel will work best for your child. I don't think that anything is guaranteed cure for this. Don't feel guilty - we are all in the same boat. If the alternatives sound interesting, research them and see if you feel comfortable with them. Hope this helps, Michele ( 17, pauci & spondy) Homeopathic treatment help! Ok I have been told by several people to have McKenna take things like coral calcium, and flex seeds... I have also been told that " JRA " is linked to food allergies. As anyone ever been told this and have they tried any alternative methoods? Right now McKenna is doing extremly well. She is just on Motrin, but somehow I keep getting in the line of fire of what long term use of any drug will do to her and how I could " cure " her all together if i just figure out what food allergy she has " It could be as simple as milk " Im tired of feeling guilty for not wanting to try but to scared to make a change and have a long term mistake. Thanks for all the imput in advance! - Tamara
Guest guest
Tamara. I agree with Becki. Some people will swear up and down that taking away dairy or adding this herbal supplement changed their kid. It could happen, but more than likely it was a fluke or they didn't have very serious symptoms. There are waay too many unknowns with homeopathic treatments. Stick to what is known. If you really want to try something consult your rheumy first. Also, remember most people who have arthritis or know someone who have arthritis do not have Rheumatoid Arthritis. They are two completely different beasts and cannot be thought of or treated the same. Good luck Alia and Caroline, age 2, poly and uveitis Re: Homeopathic treatment help! Guest guest
Tamara, There are some on this list that are either still in progress of investigating alternative approaches or are using them. I hope they chime in for you. Whatever you try, please take every precaution that it is not a scam. We all know there is no cure as of today. You could spend a lot of money chasing solutions in the dark. Be careful. Maybe you should get McKenna allergy tested. We go to a good ped. allergist at St. Luke's Meridian. Let me know if you want his name and contact info. (He was actually instrumental in pointing us in the right direction [finally] in getting Hunter diagnosed). Also, maybe you should give DawnL a call (from our local support group). I know she mentioned she was interested in trying anything. Guest guest
Hi Tamara, I tend to agree with Becki - only because when I read about scientific studies about things like the coral calcium - (the coral calcium is no better than regular calcium - Robbie takes 1000 mgs of calcium a day - and still flares) - anyway the studies usually prove that much of these things that our well meaning friends try to get us to use to help our kids. I am not saying that homeopathic medicine doesn't have it's place - and I believe that a healthy diet is very important to our overall health (ask Robbie how much I have increased his daily fruit since his recent GI symptoms - although he already ate a fairly well balanced diet before) - beyond that I don't think that avenue would be very successful. There are some on the list who feel that the steps the have taken that way has been successful - and I don't mean to take away from where they are with it - it just isn't the right choice in my opinion, for my son. Do speak with the rheumy and pediatrician before adding anything new in the treatment of your child - many of these things can have side affects that you may not be aware of - just because they are derived from " natural sources " doesn't mean that it's safe - cocaine and opium are derived from natural sources too. (not to say that these items would be as devastating - just to illustrate the need to talk to the doctors before making a decision.) Concern over any medicine long term is a valid concern. Motrin as much as any other - is your child taking Motrin daily? I would be concerned about that. If Motrin is needed daily & is the only medication your child is on for their arthritis - then eventually another medication will more than likely be the answer. This is overwhelming at first, and very difficult. I was blown away by the amounts and types of medications I was giving my son after he was first diagnosed - and continue to be at time - but his health and well being - and his quality of life depend on them - so we forge ahead - and you keep looking for a better answer, to keep them going. I hope this helps - you and your child are in our thoughts and prayers.
