This was a round table discussion I attended. My notes are few, but I

felt that they were worth passing along.

Some parents in the group advised that once your child selects a college

to attend, to seek out a rheumatologist in that college town prior to the

child's departure for college. Bring records. Develop a relationship.

Sometimes the health services on campus will be instrumental in helping

with your child's monthly blood draws, for example. Have the student keep

a copy of their standing lab orders in their wallet, as well as the

all-important list of medications. Have their local rheumatologist write

a letter describing their condition and give it to the director of health

services on campus.

Some families have found that smaller colleges are easier to work with in

addressing the ongoing medical needs of the student.

They also suggested checking with vocational rehab in your particular

state to see if there were college money available to attend state

colleges.

Some good points here, since is going to be applying this fall. I

think he may end up where his sister is (Marquette U in Milwaukee) so it

is not too far from home. Thanks, Michele

e,

I am in the same bost as you and found out that will be able to see

her Ped rhuemy for a few more years. At least til she's 20 this is from what

I was told. So check with that Dr first. will also be attending

College fall 2005. The choice to change Rhuemy's will be our's if we want to

switch

in the next few months. want's to live at home. So there's several

College's that are close in. One is right at her Ped dr and the other is right

close to her Rhuemy. Both are within 2 blocks of the College's she has chosen.

What is Joe wanting to be? Was you at the conference?

too starts college fall of 2005. We discussed this with his rheumy

and he said that he will continue to see until he is ready to move

on - probably through college. Then he will help with transition to

adult rheumy. The rheumy said basically its up to and how long he

wants to be seen at a childrens hospital. So far, he's staying there.
