Guest guest
Hi All, We had our 1st Pediatric Rheumatology appt today at University of Alabama. has been diagnosed with Pauciarticular Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. We ae being started on Naprosin tomorrow and the Dr gave us a pamplet on a med called Plaquenil to read over and decide if we want to try it? Is anyone on this and are there very bad side effects? We are having to get a eye exam soon and more recent lab work done. We have to go back in 3 weeks to follow up. I am thankful we now have a name for all of s problems, but i just wish it wasn't this! know what i mean? Thanks to everyone for there help and i am sure i will have more questions soon. Guest guest
Kyla, n has been on plaquenil for five years, and we have never seen any side effects. It can rarely cause retina damage that is reversible, so one has to be monitored every six months by a pediatric opthomalogist. Plaquenil is the least toxic of the Dmard's , but the least effective. I have read somewhere that it is only about 20% effective. Good luck. (n, 15, systemic) Finally a diagnosis for !!! Guest guest
Kyla, I am sure it seemed like forever until you got into the Rheumy, but I am so glad it finally came. While it is good to put a name to all these symptoms it is sad to face the realities for you and . I am glad that they are started Naprosyn. Keep in mind it does take 6-8 weeks for results so don't get discouraged if you don't see immediate results. I know there are some kids on Planquenil here. We haven't tried it because I believe it doesn't come in a liquid form. Good luck on your decision! Alia and Caroline, age 2, poly and uveitis Finally a diagnosis for !!! Guest guest
Hi, I am so sorry you are now " an official " member of this list. Every one of us on this list has had the same feelings that you are going through right now!!! What will all the meds do long term, how long will this last, when will the next flare happen, will they " out grow " it or live a miserable life, how can we plan for the unknown, etc., etc. I am not minimizing your feelings, just confirming that we all still have a lot of those thoughts and questions. One day at a time, is the only answer I can come up with. My son was on Plaquenil for about a month. We stopped it because he got an all-over body rash. We didn't know if it was from the plaq. or if it was a flare. We'll never know but it cleared up in 3 days. It is a mild DMARD and has mild side-effects. Don't be scared about the eye side-effects....our ped. ophth. told me that it is a rare side-effect and he's only seen it in a few people that had been on plaq for many many years. I'm glad you got a diagnosis and can now move forward with an action plan. Stacia and Hunter,8,systemic,iritis
Guest guest
Kyla, I am glad that you got some answers and I hope that things will start improving for . My daughter, Aundrea is 8 and we just had her rheumy visit a couple of weeks ago. She had a pretty tough winter and ended up missing 7 weeks of school. She was started on Plaquenil and Ibuprofen. (She had upset tummy and dizziness with the Naprosyn) Anyway, after about 2 months on the Plaquenil she showed a remarkable improvement. Her joints rarely ever bother her and the sorethroats are gone. The only side effects that we have noticed from the Plaquenil is that she bruises very easily and she is sensitive to sunlight. Her condition improved so much she was able to play softball this summer. She is running and jumping and acting like her old self. During the winter months she had put on a little weight due to inactivity. But all of that resolved as soon as she was able to be active again. I sure hope that has good luck with the Plaquenil if you decide to try it. We waited for about 7 months trying different types of NSAIDS before we started Aundrea on the Plaquenil. In her case she didn't have any relief of symptoms until after about 2 months on the Plaquenil. God Bless, (mom to Aundrea jra age 8) - In , " Pranke, Alia " <Alia.Pranke@t...> wrote: > Kyla, I am sure it seemed like forever until you got into the Rheumy, but I > am so glad it finally came.
