:

I have seen d-dimers done on patients to rule out a pulmonary embolus or

other clotting abnormalities. I'll have to research its relationship to

JRA.

Hi All,

Does anyone have information on the d-dimers lab test and how it

relates to JRA?

Thanks

Hi ,

The Fibrin D-dimer is one of the lab tests that Robbie's Ped Rhuemy team does to

identify MAS (Macrophage Activation Syndrome) - it is apparrently one of the

primary indicators - though it being elevated on it's own does not mean that the

patient has MAS. (Where have we heard that before?) It isn't the only factor -

and we have read earlier posts that have given us a lot of information on the

diagnosis, but my stomach goes in knots everytime I see that Robbie's is

elevated. Robbie's was very high during his first JRA admission, (when he was

3) and that along with the severe systemic symptoms he had is what lead to the

secondary admitting diagnosis of MAS - which I knew nothing at all about at the

time. Today if they included it in his admitting diagnosis I would probably

have a heart attack. Anyway - Robbie's is generally always high when he flares

- and it comes down when we raise the steriods and other meds. His was high

when he was admitted last month - and from his labs drawn this week, is normal

again. I hope this helps - which I knew more of the scientific side.

Val,

Thanks for the information. How concerned would you be (if at all)

if all other labs were normal, except the d-dimers which is very

elevated?
