Our ophth. on Mon. didn't use a rating system but said he saw a " couple dozen " cells in each eye. So I guess Hunter's rating based on your information is a either a 2+ or 3+. (not a 1 or 2 out of 10 as the doc. put it to me). Other than the pred forte drops, what are other treatments? I am scared to death of the pred. drops and the cataracts and glaucoma they cause. I've never heard of anyone mentioning any treatment other than the pred forte. Guest guest Posted March 11, 2004 Report Share Posted March 11, 2004 Stacia- You'll see a number of articles at the site I mentioned (www.uveitis.org from Massachussetts Eye & Ear) which discuss a step-ladder approach. The pred-forte drops (usually combined with dilating drops) are the first line of treatment. It is then recommended that a more systemic approach be used to avoid prolonged use of steroid drops which can cause cataracts and glaucoma on their own. NSAIDs, DMARDs and oral prednisone may be used (sometimes in greater amounts than needed to control the arthritis) to bring eye inflammation under control. I'd look into this and talk to your rheumy and opthamologist about this approach if the inflammation doesn't respond soon to the Pred Forte, or if the inflammation keeps increasing every time you try to taper. Caroline's doc's also put her on Apitone (spelling?) to help with light sensitivity, etc. Besides the pred drops every waking hour they also prescribed ORAL pred 2 times a day. We had to take her off the oral stuff because of her liver, but maybe Hunter's doc can do something like that. We have her two doc's conference each other and they work out a plan together which is kind of nice. Guest guest Posted March 11, 2004 Report Share Posted March 11, 2004 Hi Alia- I noticed that you mentioned Caroline is on Apitone? to control light sensitivity. Genevieve is on cyclopentolate 2 times a day to dilate her eyes. They do this because with her flare everything was "stuck together" and this helps prevent it/unstick them. One of my other daughters has a drop called Atropine for a different (non JRA) issue. This dilates her eye. Both of these drops cause light sensitivity (which Genevive also had prior to drops due to the flare) due to the fact that they dilate. I am interested in what Caroline is on that would help with this. Is she also on a dilating drop at the same time? I tried to search apitone but came up with nothing. I hope she feels better soon.
