Bridget-

Same thing happened with . She initially only had swelling in her right knee. Then she was in remission. When she came out of it, she had swelling in the right knee, her left ankle, her left elbow and her right wrist. Since it seemed to be getting more aggressive, we put her on methotrexate. She is currently in remission again, but is having a bout of iritis. Get her on some meds fast. Sounds like she may need something stronger than she was on before. Best of luck.

My daughter Meaghan is 3 years old and was diagnosed with pauci jra

1 1/2 years ago. We took her to her rheumy last month and was told

she was in remission. However, just in the last 2-3 days we have

noticed that her left knee( the jra started in her right knee) has

begun to swell as well as her ankle(left). We know she has not

injured herself lately. She has also complained with her elbow.

Does anyone else have a child with pauci that has had the same

problems? I know that pauci means 5 or fewer joints, but it seems to

be spreading.

Hi,Bridget. It does sound like she is starting a flare. I know this

happens with my son as well. Originally it was only one ankle, then the

other. Then those felt better then his big toes swelled up for a while.

Then his back and tendons became involved (which added spondy to his

diagnosis). What meds does your daughter take? She may need a new one,

or a temporary increase in something she is taking. When do you go back

to the dr? If it is not soon, I would call and let them know of her new

symptoms. Your daughter can absolutely come out of a medicated

remission. Has she been sick recently? Or has the weather changed

recently where you are? These things have caused my son to flare when he

had been doing well. I hope that Meaghan is feeling better soon, Michele

Bridget,

My daughter (age 6) is also in the " pauci " category. For the

longest time (four years, in fact), her left knee was the only joint

affected, and it had been responding well to medication (although

we've tried quite a variety!). She had an appointment in December,

and her arthritis has spread to her other knee and her big toe. We

also battle uveitis (albeit mild).

Was Meaghan taken off medication when you were told she was in

remission? has never truly been in remission, so she has been

on NSAIDs continuously for four years. However, it was still a shock

(after all this time) to find out that her arthritis had spread. I

wasn't expecting that at all.

has been taking Vioxx for well over a year, and her doctor has

just added sulfasalazine. It's too early yet to know whether the

sulfasalazine will help. We just started giving that to her a few

days before Christmas.

I'm so sorry that Meaghan's arthritis has come back and spread. I

know how you feel. I know that if I noticed in the things that

you are noticing, 's pediatric rheumatologist would want me to

call him. Let us know what happens.

Michele,

Thanks for your help. The doctors have taken Meaghan off of all her meds.(UGH) Some days are better than others. She is due to see her eye doctor in 3 days. She complains of the sun being too bright and is constantly squinting outside. But back to her swelling-she has not been sick, but we did have a cold snap come through lately.

Thanks again,

Bridget
