Hi

has recently been started on a small dose of Trileptal in an effort

to control seizures that were occurring during sleep. This is the 6th day

on it, and today she seems to be having difficulty speaking. She either

moves her mouth to speak, and can't get the words out; or she gets the

words out but it is all gobblygook and not understandable.

I am wondering whether it could be a side-effect from the Trileptal? Has

anyone else had this experience?

Prior to starting the Trileptal she was having a great number of sz in her

sleep. The benzo drugs did not halt them, they just turned her into a

dribbling vegetable. So I don't know whether this speech problem is the

result of those sz/benzos, or the Trileptal.

I'd be glad of any input!

If this doesn't change by tomorrow I will be contacting her neuro.

Many thanks

Jill

I take trileptal for over a year now. I have complex partial

seizures. Talking like she is I am wandering if she had alot of

seizures in the night that caused her to talk like that. I do have

problems speaking somedays especially if I need more sleep. But I

wonder if that is my problem the medication.

Second of all trileptal takes away the sodium. That can cause

seizures also if your sodium is too low. I only have complex partial

but I had a grand mal in dec and one very close call. I have to keep

up with my sodium alot. I am getting off at the end of june. I have

been getting blood work every month to keep an eye on it. Start

putting more salt on her foods or eating pistatios or something with

salt. I do not salt my food so I am always forgetting to do it. My

sodium was pretty low a couple of weeks ago. I could feel seizures

were trying to come out.

I don't know yet because I only have one or two options left. I am

also on phenobarbital which I can't seem to get off of. Everytime I

try I have a grand mal. So we put it at a stand still for one year.

So that is going to be changed also in time. good luck with the

ketogentic diet. I was on that too as an adult about 5 years ago.

Jill,

My daughter, , was on Trileptal and we took her off due to the

increase in seizures, but her speech was fine, but we currently have her

on Zonegran and her speech is somewhat slurred and hard to understand

sometimes. How long has she been on it? Sometimes you might have to

give it at least three weeks to see if it goes away, if after three weeks

it doesn't go away, then I'd mention it to the neuro. Good Luck!
