Guest guest Posted December 7, 2001 Report Share Posted December 7, 2001 Hi , I think they recommend removal of meds suddenly because they either don't think weaning slowly makes a difference, they have the attitude of charge ahead and if it doesn't work then radiate or they don't have a thorough understanding of thyroid disease. Prior to this Endo the other three docs I had never mentioned slow withdrawal. I didn't know any better at that time so didn't question their methods (except for the 3rd doc). Since you are the patient and you're the one with the disease and you're the one paying the bills, you might want to tell the doctor you prefer to reduce the dosage slowly instead of rushing into stopping your medication. Take someone with you to your next visit - moral support makes you stronger. Doctors are less argumentative when there's a witness. Make sure you have enough medication too. If they ask you if you need more meds, say yes. This way you can reduce your meds slowly and at your next appointment let him know what you're doing or not. That's what I did...the last doc would tell me to take one pill/day and I would take 1 1/2 instead. No one told me I just somehow knew I should stay on the meds longer. My dentist said something interesting yesterday while trying to adjust my bite....when I hesitated about him filing a tooth he told me " This is a team effort - you let me know how you feel. " This is how the Endo's should work with us instead of dictating. Keep in touch and the best of luck, remember...it's your life and your health!
