I work in mid-town Manhattan and the only way to go home to Brooklyn is to go downtown to where the devastation is. We (myself and a co-worker who is also from Brooklyn) had to walk all the way. One of my co-workers has a friend who works on the 68th floor of one of the towers. He starts at 8am and I prayed he made it out or that he didn't go in. My God, I've never seen anything like that! Big black, billowing clouds of smoke, dust everywhere. I saw firefighters leaving covered in soot, one of them with his head bandaged. As we walked close to the towers area (they kept us blocks away from it but you could see it) the dust got thicker and we passed people who were covered in it. I saw a hugh column of black smoke rising up where the towers used to stand. It looked like a never ending fire. Then we walked passed to the bridge. They had one bridge open for us to walk across to Brooklyn. We used the Manhattan Bridge. You could see all the lights of the emergency cars going across the Brooklyn Bridge, which was a little way away from us. The water below us was filled with emergency ships and what looked like a military vessel. I don't think our harbor has seen that much life since the 1860's. As we crossed, we heard this booming noise 3 times. I swear I thought this was it, but someone said it was large emergency trucks on the lane below us. I still wanted off that bridge fast!! As we crossed the bridge, a fighter plane crossed overhead. I never saw one before. It's very loud and very fast. A big black triangle shape speeding by. And again you could see the smoke clouds and the empty spot where the trade towers used to be from the bridge. I'm tired from that very long walk home. Subways were shut down. My brother drives a delivery truck and because of traffic he decided to cut across another way. That's when he looked up as saw the tower pouring smoke. He thought it was a fire, then he watched the other plane as it crashed right into the second tower. He was so shocked! He got out of there fast because he figured it might not be over and he didn't want to be trapped. Anyway, let's all be well and pray for the many, many dead. This is beyond belief. This is a shock to our country but in particular to people like you who live in the area and witnessing the carnage. Our city has literally shut down - I was also sent home - I work on a military base. The streets are quiet, businesses are closed, airports, anything with large groups of people is closed. San Francisco is very much on alert, as you can imagine. And the Golden Gate Bridge is being watched carefully. A friend of mine from Philadelphia, where I was born, had her only daughter getting married this weekend. The daughter was going to fly up from Florida, so they cancelled this much-looked forward to wedding. The entire country is in shock, and equating this to Pearl Harbor; however, the numbers killed in Pearl Harbor are going to be dwarfed by this. 50,000 were in that building alone, though I pray that most of them got out. I know there are a minimum of 600 in hospitals, some burned from head to toe. Arlene in CA PS: I do genealogy work, and one of my " cousins " in Australia sent his condolences to us in the states! So while some around the world may be cheering this attack, others are in mourning with us. Disneyland, etc. Amazingly, the elementary school where I work and the other one where my son attends school stayed open as usual. They decided it was best to try and keep the children in as normal a routine as possible. Some of the parents decided to come and take their kids out early. I went to work but came home because I wanted to be close to home in case they changed their minds and decided to let the schools close early. All airports here are shut down and it's weird not to hear planes flying over head going to Santa Airport. Madonna cancelled her show at the Staples Center tonight and the Getty is closed. That's it from the West coast for now. You probably all know more details than I put here. Hopefully, we can get through this as a nation and help each other. These people should be ashamed and arrested. Watching Jennings who is in contact with Ted Koppel in London. Europe is on alert too. Germany has cancelled their huge auto show and the other countries are looking at their " large crowd " events planned and canceling. Isn't it amazing??!! I'm sure they're thinking that if American can be attacked what sort terrorism can they expect? A frightening thought. I'm sure the rest of the world is as stunned as Americans..... As you may remember, I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a college town. The daycare assistants who work for me are students at Western Michigan University. When came in to work today, she told me that her boyfriend was sitting in class when the news broke. One of the students in his class is from Pakistan. When this boy heard what happened, he said, "You mean there was a terrorist attack? Woo-hoo!!" Now, other than being totally unfeeling and disrespectful of those around him, don't you think this might be rather dangerous behavior for someone who is a guest in our country? And receiving the benefit of an American college education and hospitality of our country, to boot? This kind of thing worries me. That kind of behavior on a college campus will surely invite violence amongst our students. It's horrible enough that this kind of a political attack has actually occurred, but to let it bleed into the college student population to wreak havoc there, as well! These are exactly the people the terrorist look for who are already here legitimately and who are sympathetic to the cause. They would be contacted to help from within the country so that they can carry these acts out. They are of the age group the attackers are in. This jerk needs to be thrown out for our safety. They were expecting to open at 9:00 a.m. today but nitched that idea. They are still waiting for word from the FAA. Disneyland is supposed to open today. UCLA has canceled the game at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. We were supposed to be there as my husband is in charge of the pregame events for the athletics department. This was mainly do to observing what happened and also because some of the teams didn't want to fly out, etc. Hopefully, we'll be able to get back together. (I think LA was lucky.) Barb S. P.S. Today we were all sent home again and the military bases on higher alert again. Two hours to get onto base yesterday, will be tough again tomorrow. The zoo had a bomb threat today so it was shut down, all the tall bldgs were evacuated, large group events cancelled. Just heard on the news that people arrested (Arab nationals) using false passports and pilot licenses in JFK and Laguardia. Seems the threat is not over - they're trying to get back into planes again. 30,000 - 50,000 reservists are being called up - I work with several guys that are in the reserves. Seems we're still grounded. People are travelling by bus, train and car..... We may have been attacked and terrorized but our resolve as a country is strong, we will prevail!! Today he woke up with the starts of a very bad cold and he said his throat hurt. His nose is also VERY stuffy, poor baby! Since it's Friday, we decided to keep him home. Right now he's in the other room watching cartoons. I'm watching the memorial service right now on CNN. Since you said you worked with guys in the reserves, were any of them called up yet? I heard that Bush was going to call up the reserves to help in New York? LAX is trying to start up again. The first flight back landed yesterday. A poor local newscaster woman tried to get people to talk to her but no one would stop. Finally the anchor on TV bailed her out and told her to leave them alone. Last night my husband and I finally got to go out for a bit. We had mixed emotions about going but we had tickets for the Modonna concert at the Staple and we finally decided to go. She was really great too and I was surprised at how good she was at how she acknowledged what happened. First she came out wearing a skirt made of the United States flag and then after doing a few songs, she and her group got together holding hands and she stated that it would be irrisponsible if she didn't acknowledge what had happended. Also she stated that the money we paid for the tickets would go into to benefit the children who were affected by the attack. She also asked for a moment of silence for the people who died and for the workers taking the bodies out of the ruble. I felt so sorry for her though because her fans were acting like jerks when everybody was trying to be silent. Some were yelling and some were saying, " I Love You Modonna. " You could tell she was getting upset and finally she just yelled, " SHUT UP! " The crowd finally stopped and there was silence. I couldn't believe how childish people were at that moment. After that, she continued with the show and came out later with a top that had was made with the United States flag pattern. I work with someone in the reserves but he hasn't been called up - however, one of the guys he works with was called last week. It's amazing how rude and inconsiderate some people can be...it's doesn't surprise me that there were a few rude jerks at the concert. The Marine air show cancelled their show which was probably a good idea. Lots of events taking place around here to raise funds for the rescuers families. These evil men that caused such destruction and grief only brought our country closer together. It also heartwarming to see the support and concern of the rest of the world. I think we are all slowly getting back to normalcy but there are changes.
