I think this is a wonderful idea. I don't know how I could help, but

if you would like actual parental imput as to changes they have seen with

their kids,I would be happy to relate our experience.

I don't really understand the problem with your professor's problem with #2

re: OT in the control group. What about the timing of patient improvements

in addition of HBOT with OT vs OT alone.

[ ] HBOT research

Hi everyone,

Sunny told me about this group. I just started going for my masters of OT

two weeks ago. I have a lot of experience working with brain-injured

children, especially those who have nearly drowned. I belong to a group on

called parentsofneardrowns and have also started a nonprofit called

HUGS (www.hugsfoundation.org). So many of the kids on the group have done

HBOT and have shown a lot of improvements. Next year, I have to do a

research project. I'd like to help the kids on the site somehow, and I

thought of HBOT. Now, I have a few months before I have to have a topic

chosen, but I thought I'd come up with a hypothesis and run it by my

professor:

> Children with Cerebral Palsy will become more aware and will develop

> more control of their muscles when they are able to have Hyperbaric

> Oxygen Treatments (HBOT) in connection with Occupational THerapy rather

> than just Occupational Therapy alone.

My professor had three problems with this:

1. He says OT's probably don't do the actual HBO treatments.

2. The way I worded my hypothesis, I'm putting OT in the control group. I

should be studying something more OT related.

3. He said the main problem would be getting research subjects. ( I really

wouldn't think that would be a problem.)

My professor admitted he really doesn't know anything about HBOT and has no

experience with it.

Any thoughts? If I came up with the right research topic, I could prove the

HBOT works. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

God bless,

Hipsher

& Pat,

Thank you for your interest.

I really feel strongly about doing this research. My professor told me to

find a different project, like I said, but if there's anyway I could do this,

I sure would like to.

Thank you for offering to help -- I'll keep you in mind and will let you know

if I need you. First of course, I need to get my professor's approval on the

project... I need a plan :-)

If you could, please direct the parents of the 7 children who have nearly

drowned to our HUGS site,

especially the 19 month old child. We would like

to offer them support. Its very encouraging that the 19 month old is getting

HBOT so soon (I'm assuming the accident was recently).

Thank you to everyone else who replied and showed support for my project. At

this point, it's a no-go, but if I can find a way to convince my professor

that this is a worthwhile project (while incorporating OT) it may work.

Please keep in touch.

God bless,

Hipsher

Dear

it is a real pity that your professor cannot see the importance of putting

OTs to work in a field where they are really needed.

It is known that patients often regain motor habilities while in the chamber.

You OTs are well equiped to evaluate eventual change and to train for solid and

established gains.

The fact that chambers do evoke unusual control and movements is seldom

properly registered,

let alone researched.

At the same time, variable amounts of work under hyperbaric conditions

may enhance hypersensitivity to oxygen,

-some people wrongly call it oxygen toxicity-, specially in brain injured

patients.

All these factors are known, but not yet thoroughly researched,

or even properly hypothesized upon.

OTs could be instrumental in gearing a graded training protocol under pressure,

while preventing these side-effects through a set of suitable measures.

Post-chamber training protocols should also be studied and established.

Do not abandon the boat.

Best regards.

Hi ,

Can I ask the little girls first name? I will definitely keep her in my

prayers. Please let me know how she does. How long ago did her accident

happen? If you could, tell her parents about our support group.

:-)

Thanks!

Ditto! This should not be a confounding factor if OT is involved with both

groups.

Cool, thank you.. I didn't really understand the reasoning either. I'm

building an argument and will try real hard to do this research :) Thank you

everyone who's offered advice.
