Guest guest
Delayed report shows surge in autism cases Province reluctantly releases details of 55% jump in 2 years by Orwen social policy reporter The numbers of Ontario children diagnosed with autism are soaring, says a government study. In 1998, nearly 800 kids younger than 6 were newly diagnosed with the neurological disorder, a 53 per cent jump over the same period two years earlier. The study, completed in March, 2000, by the provincial health ministry, was released at a news conference yesterday at Queen's Park hosted by Liberal community and social services critic Gravelle. " We don't know why we're seeing this explosion, but we do know that it's a dramatic one and it has people worried ... if the numbers keep escalating and we don't treat these kids, the results will be tragic, " said Dr. Ari Zaretsky, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Sunnybrook hospital. " This is a shocking number, and the government is going to have to commit more money to treatment, " said Gravelle, adding that the province has consistently refused to give him any statistics on autism. The 2-year-old report probably would never have become public without the persistence of University of Toronto professor , Gravelle added. Ofner-Agostini, the mother of a 2-year-old autistic child, began calling the provincial health ministry in January, asking for the report. The epidemiologist had learned through colleagues that the ministry had done a review of autism on OHIP databases. " After several weeks of me phoning them five times a day asking for it, I finally got a call. I was told (by a senior ministry official) that I couldn't have the report and I couldn't ask any questions about it, " Ofner-Agostini said. She finally obtained a copy from a researcher at Queen's University. " The government has refused to release this report and downplayed the numbers of children with this disorder because they don't want to fund the treatment, " Gravelle said. The study found that 2,863 children younger than 7 were diagnosed with autism between 1991 and 1998. The province is spending $39 million for intensive one-on-one therapy known as applied behavioural analysis for 500 children. Some 900 are waiting. But once they turn 6, these children will no longer be eligible for the treatment, which costs $50,000 a year. At least a dozen families have filed human rights complaints. Health ministry spokesperson Jensen offered no explanation yesterday as to why anyone would have had difficulty obtaining the report. He referred questions on treatment to the Ministry of Community and Social Services. Officials there weren't available, but former minister Baird has said Ontario's treatment program " is the best in Canada. " Zaretsky said treatment is fully covered in the U.S. because of guarantees under the Americans with Disabilities Act. He said researchers are seeing a similar surge in autism in other countries, but what environmental factors may be involved is unknown. Ofner-Agostini was told it would take two years to get her daughter, Nadia, accepted for the ABA program. " We have no choice but to pay for the therapy ourselves, " she said. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ " I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. Guest guest
Dear , It is a real shame that three relatively inexpensive and overlooked techniques are effective and efficient for childrem with autism. Hyperbaric therapy, lysates and homotoxicological preparations may dramatically change the condition(s), depending on its variety and ethiology. In this South American sophisticated city, a combined treatment for such a condition would cost around $100-150 a month, plus the required HBO sessions (another $800 in the first month). All in all, a maximum of $1000, and sharply plummeting after the first course, as oxygen requirement decline. At variance with the mentioned Canadian figures, isn´t it? Thank you for making us aware of the extent of the upsurge, and of the boreal costs of treating, but unfortunately, not curing it. Any hints about the reasons? Best regards. Guest guest
Dear Dr Fojgel, Please tell me about these other treatments. I am very interested in learning and giving the information to the parents of the children we treat. Guest guest
Greetings! Dr. Fojgel, it is good to see you back! I pray things are going well for you. A while back on the other list (shut down by " big brother " ((UHMS guard dog)) ) an article on Mycotoxins used in test/science projects by the US military was offered as a possible reason why so many since the 1950's are coming down with auto-immune dis-ease. The concept has been brought forward many times by retired head of the World Health Org.Center for Mycotoxins in Food, Dr. A.V. Constantini, that fungal mycotoxins, of which anti-biotics is included, in fact, are the culprits for much of our di-ease and genetic altered health problems. Mycotoxins are living organisms that can overcome cells at the DNA level and alter them. I don't think you can find a person in the civilized world that hasn't had an anti-biotic. Some of these Autistic, ADD, ADHD kiddos have had since birth high exposure to anti-biotic therapies. Immunizations (which are meant to keep us from communicanble disease and philosophically are needed) are mycotoxins swimming in themerisol (in most countries) as the delivery agent. Themerisol is mercury. It doesn't stop there, Dr. Constantini sees that our food supply is full of mycotoxins for a number of reasons. Anti-biotics are injected in meats and poultry. What is not known to most vegetarians is that most vegetables have their own mycotoxins. Wheat and corn have the major culprits, but these foods permeate our S.A.D. diets The nutritional triangle with fruits, vegetables, grains, and complex carbs suggested as being the food groups that our bodies need the most of only work if they are non-toxic. Before I go any further, I would like to say that what works for one does not necessarily work for all. I have recently been studying a book called The Fungus Link, by Doug A. Kaufmann. I would like to post a short section on What the Experts Say about Fungal Diseases. There is certainly no shortage of scientific literature about fungal symptoms and diseases. And the twentieth century holds nothing as far as knowledge of the many diseases caused by fungus. Just open a Bible and go directly to Leviticus 14: 34-35. This talk of fungus causing health problems is not new. As far as twentieth century fungal experts, consider Dr. Lida Mattman, a professor emeritus at Wayne State University. In her excellent book Stealth Path- ogens, Dr. Mattman asks, " Are fungi in blood smears overlooked because they are confused with blood cells? " She answers a resounding " Yes! " From that one statement alone, just imagine how many blood conditions are misdiagnosed because machines or laboratory technologists just can't differentiate between spores and cells. Another bold statement is made on the same page. This one by Dr. M. G. Rinaldi, who says, " Given the right immunocompromised host, virtually any fungus can kill a human being. " Holland, M. D., has a book in his office called Medical Mycology by C.C. Kibbler. (Mycology is the study of fungus.) In this book, published in 1995, 18 prominent physicians from large universities like Duke, Texas University, and Stanford expound on the serious health threats that fungi pose. Here are some of the chapters in Medical Mycology: Fungal Disease of the Bone and Joint; Fungal Diseases of the Cardiovascular System; Mycoses [fungi] causing mass lesions of the Central Nervous System; Fungal Diseases in Dermatology; Fungal Infestons of the Ear, Nose, and Throat; Fungal Infections of the Gastrointestinal Tract; Fungal Infections of the Respiratory Tract; and even Fungal Diseases in Opthalmology. Wouldn't you think every doctor in the world would understand that these microorganism might cause disease? Why don't they? I'm glad you asked! Most doctors believe that fungus only infects immonucompromised (lowered immunity) patients. If this were true, then San Joaquin Valley Fever, caused by breathing the fungi Coccidioides immitus, could not have possibly killed young, healthy military men. What about the ABC episode of Primetime aired April 9, 1997, dealing with infants who are sick and dying from fungal exposure in their homes? Or are women who suffer from vaginal yeast infections immununo- compromised? In each of these instances, the integrity of the immune system was only challenged AFTER fungal exposure - not before. So, who is immuno- compromised? Are the air we breathe and the water we drink compromising our immune systems? How about the medicines that most Americans take? Since antibiotics are mycotoxins (fungal poisons), perhaps we can now define compromised immunity as applying to anyone who has ever taken an antibiotic! That is certainly a lot of people, but while you ponder that potential statistic, the following may put it in perspective for you. In 1963, Dr. Harold T. Hyman published in The Complete Home Medical Ency- clopedia that appoximately one-half of the population of the United States had, at one time or another, suffered from a fungal disorder that had been " unrec- ognized. " Now, my question for you is: has medical science really progressed since 1963? Or are 125,000,000 Americans still suffering from " unrecog- nized " fungal disorders? Is it possible that the reason why these kiddos are being helped by HBOT because oxygen is an environment in which these mycotoxins cannot survive? Can it be that HBOT provides the extra push that these little bodies need to heal themselves, not only the injury to the brain, but also the other symptoms that are promulgated by the process of brain injury and dis-ease? Is it possible that probiotics and anti-fungal suppplements and meds in tandem with HBOT is the best chance of reversal of symptoms? I know that I am probably not using the right terminoloy, and that I am a layman, but it seems that as an Argentinian Dr. schooled all over the world, you have an expertise that our conventional US physicians don't learn in our medical schools. Most Microbiologists understand these concepts, but they usually don't become MD's, they usually end up in a research facility concentrating on how a certain drug affects the cells. Just thinking out loud. Guest guest
Dear Orwen: Here is California, we probably have one of the largest populations with autism. It is probably so because we have a very large population, and so many naiive doctors, who naturally do as they were trained to do; i.e., vaccinate, vaccinate and continue to vaccinate. Male children are more vulnerable due to their slower maturation of the nervous system. As to why some get it and some don't, you need to look further. Usually, you will find that the infant may have had a traumatic birth; i.e., some lack of oxygen, forceps and don't forget the damages of anesthesia given to the mother. Anesthesia crosses the placenta within 90 seconds which will cause the lowering of oxygen to baby. (I read that many years ago while I was doing my own small research - before any Internet was available, and during the era when parents or any client had access to their own medical records.) Or the infant may have some very, very weak immune system due to genetic factors. In any event, all of the aforementioned, simply sets the infant up for tragedy when they receive those early shots. When my son (with autism) received his first DPT shot he was 2 months old, but he was one of those youngsters that had been delivered with suction forceps, sustaining a very large hematoma. He had been full term, and was so beautiful, so he was sent home as being " perfect. " His early hyperactivity and even precociousness were never looked upon by his pediatrician as probablamatical. In any event by age 2-1/2 he collapsed and regressed in many areas. My story is too long for this discourse, but it is important that parents-to-be and the social service agencies look carefully at the demands of the medical and governmental institutions are making of them. When a child is so young, and his own liver does not yet have the enzynes to detoxify the elements in the vaccinations, particularly when more than one is administered, it is an abomination to force parents to allow those procedures. It's like playing Russian Roulette. There is a great deal of information now available about autism. From my own experiences, I regard the disorder as one that involves difficulties with the processing of the senses, particularly vision, hearing and tactile. The olefacotry seems to be least affected, probably because it has good regenerative capability. As for taste, that is a question mark for me. Also, the fine motor, particularly the upper region, arms and fingers have very poor fine motor coordination. The behaviors seem to come from subclinical seizures, although, many have epilepsy, particularly starting at puberty. The bi-polar element (seizure in primitive area) is one of the more difficult to manage without medication. Thanks for caring, and with God's help and more awareness, we may deter further mutilation of our children. Sincerely, Marie Perelló (armarie)
