Guest guest
One can register as a user at this article's source site, emedicine.com. It's free and takes only a minute. It's a great article. I'm not sure what the copyright laws are on this sort of thing; I'm assuming that because it's a forwardable article it can be sent to friends. I was interested to see, under Diet, that a high-calory diet is recommended. I assume that's while one is very ill, at first. This agrees with what my GP told me when I was quite ill. My GI just said for me to eat a good, well-balanced diet with plenty of protein. (Of course, some people with liver disease must severely restrict protein.) When we read books such as Eugenia Zucker's "Coping with Prednisone", that we must remember that Zucker did NOT have liver disease; she had a very different autoimmune lung disease. Her needs were not the same as ours, and we can't safely assume that what worked for her is good for us when we our liver disease is severe. Each disease, each stage in the disease, needs to be approached differently. Under Medication, Section 7, Drug Name Prednisone, Interactions: "Coadministration with estrogens may decrease prednisone clearance . . . " Does anyone know what this means? Guest guest
Thanks Patty! I am so glad to hear from you again and hope that you are feeling much better now. I wonder if we can have a link made to our group. One click, and information like this comes up to read, like an archive. I thought that one was one of the best I've come across, and it answered a lot of my nagging questions. I can't wait to pose them to Dr. Jensen! Love, Re: Dangers of Iron Ray, I have always been told to never give my son anything fortified with iron and to try to get supplements that are iron free. When zachary was 2 he tested high for lead and they off set that by iron pills (chelation) and now are wondering if that may have helped contribute to his liver failing at such a young age after that. Jayne in NH Mother to Zach 10: AIH 02, UC 02 CF 02 > Hi, People! > > I have a question concerning iron. I read an article that says to avoid iron if you have liver disease. It says " hepatitis viruses thrive in iron-rich environments. " And that " an iron surplus impairs many aspects of immune function including T lymphocyte proliferation and maturation. " Lastly, it says " iron cataylyzes damage by oxidents. " > > That seems very clear, iron is not good! However, my doctor has told me to drink 3 cans of Ensure a day, to offset my weight loss. I have never needed to lose weight, but have lost 15-20 lbs over the last 6 weeks or so. > > Ensure seems to have 25% of most vitamins and minerals. Guest guest
Dear Ray, I used to drink Ensure but it gave me that sinking feeling.... I now drink Boost, because I can drink and run, and not to the bathroom all the time. I told my hep doctor about it and she said, " Booze?! " . I said " No, it's 'Boost' " . She felt that it could be unbalanced, but to also eat a good diet to round out the nutrients. I need to keep my weight up so I continue to drink it, sometimes two 360 calorie ones per day. Maybe your system will prefer it over 'Ensure'. I was told to take a multivitamin, but I don't know about that if I'm drinking something with vitamins already in it, don't want to tax my liver. Trish, thank you for putting in a link. I just looked at it and while there, I discovered the cutest picture of Kelsey. So glad I went to the site! Guest guest
Take a can of Boost with you to the Dr's the next time you go and compare it with Ensure. Cora
