In response to Jon's update and letter about preferential treatment. I live

in Minnesota, which happens to be the home of the famous Mayo Clinic. As we

all see on the news, whenever someone " important " from another part of the

world needs an organ it seems they show up here. Which means they take a

donated organ from the region, out of the region. Even if all protocols are

followed correctly, people from the area that need organs have one more

obstacle. This has bothered me for the last couple of years. (I am on a

heart transplant waiting list, status 7) Am I wrong in my thoughts of

unfairness? I brought this up to a Lifesource representative at a support

group meeting. She could not dispute my claim, and brushed off the question

in a way that led me to believe it was a subject they had talked about

before. I wonder if any children have died because a sick king from another

part of the world came to Minnesota?

I have

been an organ donor since I was 16 years old. And I would give up

any of my organs so that someone else could live, in a heartbeat!

Preferably after I die, but whenever!

I

have many friends.....

Kerry,

for them!

So

yes, I will donate my organs! And my mom is on the Heart & Lung

Transplant Teams... so she is a donor too!

I was helping a man who had diabetes and end stage renal failure. We were sitting in the hospital cafeteria one day and they had a card of 50 things you could donate from your body. He wanted to go through all of them to see if he could donate anything, even though I tried to discourage him. It was so depressing. There was not one thing he could donate, unless if possibly some of his bones were not too brittle. And possibly some of his skin that wasn't ulcerated. He was in terrible shape before he died. He had one leg amputated and one finger.

Although

most donors are from traumatic injuries... I have seen other organs be

used for transplant after cardiac arrest. Or sudden cardiac death.

You

just don't hear as much about donations from other types of death.

I am totally in favor of organ donation, when my son died I really wished someone would have approached me because I did not think about it. That was in 1980 and they were doing some then not as much as they are now though. I have told my family that when I dye due to my conditions I would not be a great donor but I would like to leave my body to a medical school for research. I am having some problems with my kids as they return the body after it is cremated. But if it would advance the study of science it would be well worth it.

I firmly believe that the body is only the shell that we reside in. So if

part of that body can be used to help someone else, when I am no longer in

need of it, the go for it.

Granted, none of the organs I have now will be useful to anyone else, but if

science can learn something with it, then please do. What is left, cremate

and toss into Lake Superior.

My cousin received a heart transplant almost 15 years ago and we will be

forever grateful.

I pray that I will never have to be a part of making such a decision for a

member of my family, but if I had to do so, I would in a heartbeat.

I have a bumper sticker on my car that sums it all up:

" Don't take your tissues and organs to heaven. Heaven knows we need them

here! "

My friend, who is a kidney transplant recipient sent the bumper sticker to

me.

What a small thing we can do with a body that is only borrowed, but to share

with others.

Hugs,

Jo

Ling,

Well I would think that just because a person is diabetic does not mean that

they would not be able to donate some organs.

Hypothetically - a person is dagnosed with diabetes and it is a very early

diagnosis. They leave the clinic and are hit by a car and declared brain

dead. Their organs are most likely healthy enough to be used in atransplant.

Hearts, lungs, retinas, bone marrow, skin and possibly even their liver would

most likely still be healthy.

It isn't that diabetes " invades " the organs causing them to be damaged. But

it can cause problems with other organs as a secondary illness as it destroys

other body tissues.

Now, I do not know if they WILL use the organs of a diabetic (I am diabetic,

but mine are shot to hell). But I would think that it would be dependent on

the status of the organ itself.

Too bad if they just don't give it a chance.

Hey Aisha.

Just my thoughts...

I think that people who are organ donors, and the family members that

usually have to make this decision for them, are some of the bravest, my

giving and unselfish people there are. From their tragedy, from their

pain and their loss, someone else lives, has a better life.

I wanted to donate Matty's organs, but unfortunately, mito is a

multi-system disease, and none of his organs could be used. They all had

the mutation in their cells, and most were badly damaged from the

disease itself...

*hugs* ,

My mother is not an organ donor either, and you have every right to your opinions and beliefs. You are the only one who knows how you feel and if someone dont like it they can shove it! (ohh I'm eloquenly spoken today!)

" (who believes his beliefs are not the popular ones)"

Perhaps, but its better to be true to yourself and stand your ground then go with the herd and be miserable for the rest of your life. I have far more respect for someone who can make up their own mind and follow their own beliefs rather then do something cause they think they "should."

Love Aisha.

I understand completely this is a personal choice and know many who

feel as you do. I think it is actually 50/50 on choice. There are legal

and moral issues concerned with this that are still being decided.

Thanks Anne,

Several people I know, even some family members have a hard time

understanding my wishes, and opinions on this. Still, It's my body, and

if I don't want something done, it shouldn't be done. I support other

peoples wishes to have such procedures, if they so desire. To me, it's a

very personal decision.

organ donation

This is important to me, not that I want everyone to donate their

organs... that is totally up to each and everyone. What I think is

important is that you say either yes or no, so the doctors know what

you want if you ever end up in that situation. There is a shortage of

organs in all countries, 2/3 of everyone awaiting a lung transplant

die before they can get an organ. Transplants do save lifes.

Please read this link, i know it's long... but it's worth reading.

Friends and fellow " Zappers " ..... I would like to remind everyone that organ

and tissue donation are so very important (as is blood and platelets). Even

though we have one organ that may not be in proper working order, doesn't

mean we can't donate others at the time of death. We do however have to

register with our state agency and make our wishes known to our family. In

addition, we should ask family and friends to donate these gifts of life, and

see that they get the info needed to carry through on this. If you would

really like to help, volunteer. If you could get donation pamplets in just

the Drs. office and hospitals that you go to. The CCU & ICU is also an

important place to have brochures. This may seem a bit cold, but the family

who has just lost a loved one, can know that their death can help many others

live. A coordinator with the hospital will be the one to talk to the family

and knows how to handle the situation. If we don't get the info out there,

people won't donate. Please do your part. Blessings to all

In Minnesota you just need to tell your loved ones. Even if you have an

organ donor designation on your driver's license or ID it is still up to the

next of kin. Tell your loved ones that you want to be a donor.

Something unbelievably, sorrowfully amazing has come to my attention. Not

everyone with autoimmune diseases is an " organ " donor. How can this be

possible? Who is going to save your life if all on this planet feel the

same way? What are you waiting for? what the heck is wrong with those who

didn't make this happen YESTERDAY? Tissues, corneas, bone, all parts of the

body can be used if deemed viable. We won't know and the family won't be

able to tell. Think Nike and JUST DO IT.
